The Hukkorae-class submarine was a class of nuclear-powered balistic missile submarines that were built by the DSRA. The official designation by the Anikatian People's Navy was the Hukkorae-class, but the manufacturer designation of this class was Project 483B; Hukkorae (흑고래) means Humpback whale in the Anikatian language.
The design was based on the realible and affordable design Korae-class cruise missile submarines as the current Mokae-class was plagued with problems and proving troublesome and costly to convert to its intended nuclear propulsion system.
History and development
After a troubled development with the notoriety problems plagued Mokae-class development was cancelled with only six nuclear variants in favour of more promising and cost-effective designs based on the work of the modern Korae-class submarines which were proving to be quite reliable and relatively trouble free.
Using skills and knowledge learnt from both the Mokae and Korae programmes development of a new class of submarine was to continue which would lead to the powerful new Haema-class submarine.
While this new class was under development and due to an "SSBN Gap" because of failures with Mokae class which left only a limited number of long ranged nuclear powered Mokae III variants which were also carried numerous electronics faults and issues with the new nuclear propulsion system.
The conversion of four Korae I vessels was undertaken which required significant redesigns of the hull fore of the sail replacing the 8 cruise missile silos increasing the length of the hull by 22 metres to accommodate a new hull sections holding 16 ballistic missile silos, hull this also required the increase in draft by the addition of a hump on the bottom of the hull.
The foreplanes were redesigned and also moved forward of the silos. Despite efforts to improve the hydrodynamics, the hump did slightly increase resistance creating turbulence at high speeds slightly increasing the noise somewhat increasing the detectability of the design.
All external surfaces of the outer hull, superstructure and deckhouse fencing were also covered with a special noise reduction rubber coating.
Variants
- Hukkorae I (Project 483B): 4 of this type were converted from the basic Korae I specification. These were considered SSBNs, with increased length of 22 metres, new electronic equipment, and silos holding 16 x SKG-11 SLBMs, these were nuclear-powered submarines that first saw service in 1974; They had 6 torpedo tubes and carried 16 torpedoes, mines.
- Hukkorae II (Project 483BHJ): An experimental vessel converted from a Hukkorae I. This was used for trials of new acoustic systems, new electronic equipment, and the silos were used to test the new SKG-15 SLBMs. It first saw service in 1978; They had 6 torpedo tubes and carried 16 torpedoes, mines.
