The "Spirit of Zhenia", also known as the "Swords of the East", is the national anthem of Zhenia. The song was written during the first stages of the Zhenian Civil War, as the first expeditionary forces of the Shindan Dynasty departed from Donggyeong in 1852. It was adopted as the formal military song of the Western Expeditionary Forces of the Shindan dynasty and later the Empire of Zhenia. It was chosen as the formal national anthem of the Republic of Zhenia in 1911.

Origins

The lyrics of the 'Spirit of Zhenia' originated from a poem written by Marco Jin, a member of the first Western Inspectors dispatched from the Shindan dynasty in the early 1840s as a part of Emperor Seongjo's plan to rapidly modernize the nation.

Lyrics in Modern Zhenian Translation

First verse:

Like the winds prevailing to the west,
May the torch of freedom light the earth;
From the eastern seas to the Heavenly Mountains,
May the Spirit of Zhenia enlighten the world!

(Chorus)
All Hail Great Zhenia! All Hail the Unification of the Five Jins!
Sounds of gunfire of the fatherland call us all!
Onwards to the west! Onwards to the greater world!
May the glory of Zhenia be known to the world!

Second verse:

With the spear and aegis of the God of War,
You are the protectors of the fatherland;
Now you are the spirits of unification,
As these are the men who unified the five Jins.

(Chorus)
All Hail Great Zhenia! All Hail the Unification of the Five Jins!
Sounds of gunfire of the fatherland call us all!
Onwards to the west! Onwards to the greater world!
May the glory of Zhenia be known to the world!

Third verse:

You are the descendants of Taejo Shen Lien,
Unifier of the World under the Heavenly Emperor's Guidance;
Now with the heart of the world built once again
May freedom and peace last forever!

(Chorus)
All Hail Great Zhenia! All Hail the Unification of the Five Jins!
Sounds of gunfire of the fatherland call us all!
Onwards to the west! Onwards to the greater world!
May the glory of Zhenia be known to the world!

Fourth verse:

The righteous visions of the people become one
To become the Zhenian spirit moving onwards!
Open a new age, open the heavens and the earth,
Onwards to a bright, wide future!

(Chorus)
All Hail Great Zhenia! All Hail the Unification of the Five Jins!
Sounds of gunfire of the fatherland call us all!
Onwards to the west! Onwards to the greater world!
May the glory of Zhenia be known to the world!
