Satavia, officially the Republic of Satavia (Dupowek: Repoblek Dupowek), is an Island Nation in Asteria Inferior. Located off the coast of Nuvania, Satavia (made up of the Satavian Isles) is at the westernmost part of Asteria Inferior. Seperated from Nuvania by the Satavian Channel, Satavia also makes up a part of the mouth of the West Arucian Sea, and the point where the Arucian Sea meets the Vehemens Ocean.

Satavia is formed of seven, semi-autonomus provinces, two of which are principalities, one is a teritory (see Western Hope) and the remaining four are republics, with one, Port Hope, described as a city-state. In addition, Satavia is made up of 21 counties and one duchy.

The medium-size Satavian economy relies heavily on Fishing and Timber exports. As of September 2020, efforts are under way to

The most commonly spoken language in Satavia is Estmerish and Hennish, spoken in a Creole called Satavian Estmerish. The language is not an official language, but spoken in Schools and Work Places, including the Satavian Parliament. The Country's two official languages are Dupowek and Estmerish. Dupowek is a local language, previously classified as "extinct", but since 2002 has seen a rejuvenation. Since 2005 it has been taught in schools alongside Estmerish and Gaullican. The language is promoted and regulated by mosdupowek.du.

Etymology

Historical

Satavia's former name, The Hope Dominion (previously The Hoop Colony, and untill 1747, the Hoop Kolonie) derrived from the name of Satavia's biggest river, the River Hope, known by the Dupowek natives as the Avon, translated as River. The river's fertile banks lead to the settler's calling it the Rivier-Hoop, which also lead to the main settlement, situated at the mouth of the river, being called Port Hope.

Modern Etymology

Satavia is derrived from a Muisc-Dupowek first name (now extinct), Sátiva, which means 'beautiful'. First used by Kingdom of Satavia in 1900, following the February Coup, Satavia became the name of the modern-day Republic of Satavia. In Dupowek, the country's name is Dupowek - God's Land. Before Sotirianity introduction following the Native-Pierre Agreement, the Dupowek were believed to have worshiped a pantheon of the Gods, with one "Myghtern a'n Duw", or "King of the Gods" in Estmerish. Fanatical converts, the Duchy of Dupowek is the last remaining Solarian Catholic strongholds in Satavia, the other province's since having converted to Amendism.

Main Article: Hoop Kolonie

According to Hennish explorer, coloniser and cartographer Jan van Breytenbach's diary, he first circumnavigated the Satavian Isles in 1672, before returning in 1677 and establishing Satavia's first Euclean settlement of the Hoop Kolonie in March of that year. In October, Jan van Breytenbach was appointed as the first Gouverneur van Hoop Kolonie. He also commisoned the building of the Hoopstad Royal Palace.

The colony was plagued with problems, and in June 1679, due to a lack of sewers and poor sanitation, lead to a severe outbreak of dysentery, causing mass depopulation. At around the same time, tensions with the native population, who were made up of various tribes including the Muisca, a tribe who arrived on the islands from modern-day Nuvania, and the largest local tribe, the Dupowek (also sometimes spelt as Dupowerek) rose to peak height. Dupowek warriors would attack farmers and convoies heading out of Hoopstad and would raid them of their valuables before, according to the Drolla a'n Dupowerek, removing limbs such as the arms and legs.

Hoop Kolonie (1711) by Adriaen de Wiart depicts the Hennish Settlement at Hoopstad. In reality, the painting is highly inaccurate, and de Wiart never visited the Hope Colony. Instead, he painted it off descriptions of the colony.

On the 8th August, 1679, Adam-Gabriel Pierre signed the Native-Pierre Agreement with the Dupowek Chief, Jorey Kadog. This lead to a complete cessation of hostilites with the Natives, with a promise of not enterring the interior of the Island. In effect, (with some exceptions, most notably Porth Jago), the Settlers would stay to the coast and not enter the interior, and the Dupowek would control the interior and not bother the Settlers. This lead to the Coastlines being almost completely Euclean-Controlled, with the exception of a section of the South-Eastern coast, east of Hoopstad.

In February, 1708, the Hennish Government demanded more produce from it's colonies. The Hoop Kolonie, unable to keep up with the rise in demand, and unable to pay the farmers, seized thousands of guilders worth of crops. In protest, the farmers (boers) staged a protest in central Hoopstad, only to be fired upon by soldiers. This turned into an open revolt, which ended on the 11th March, 1708, with the Boerenverdrag, in which the produce demand was lowered and the Farmers were compensated and paid futher reperations.

A Slave Beating (1733), by Estmerish artist James Brown, depicts a slave beating in Naadsvaal Province. It's exact location is unknown.
