Beroea took up a military career after turning 16, primarily serving in the [[Legio V Audonia|5th Legion]]. John was the eldest son of Prince Michael of Latium and Princess Eusbia Byzenne. He was not expected to be in line to the Latin throne at birth, due to having two uncles and a cousin ahead of him. However, he became his cousin's heir following the attainder of his cousin Lucia of Alba after her elopement to Robert, Crown Prince of Ghant. John took up a military career after turning 16.
