The Federal Navy of Durnstaal is the naval service branch of the Durnian Military. It is the third largest branch of the Durnian military and technically the oldest.
The Federal Navy was formed from the Royal Navy of Liverthaer on September 3, 1756 following the creation of the Federated Union of Durnstaal. All of the branch's original vessels and personnel were from the navy of Liverthaer and formed the backbone of the force until the early 1800's. The Federal Navy's first combat actions occurred shortly after its founding in the form of hunting down the remnants of the Liverthaer Royal Navy which had turned to piracy following the unification. Early engagements were stymied by sympathies for their fellow naval personnel, but these quickly abated when the pirates failed to respond in kind. By 1764, all Liverthaerian navy vessels not operating under the Federal Navy had been sunk or captured.
Further anti-piracy operations continued until 1823 when the Royal Coast Guard was formed to take over anti-piracy operations. The Federal Navy then began focusing almost entirely on projecting Durnian naval power throughout the Albarine Sea and escorting government shipping and diplomatic vessels.
The first ironclad, FSD Magnanimous, entered service in 1836 but saw limited development until 1872, when ironclad vessels became the fleet standard. The first dreadnought-type vessel, FSD Aleksandru entered service in 1914 followed shortly thereafter by the FSD Husa in 1917. The fleet continued to modernize but began to lag behind other navies in technology and training by the 1950's despite rapidly growing tensions and the outbreak of the Aurelia War. The cooling of tensions throughout the latter half of the 20th century led to a period of stagnancy for the Federal Navy until 2013 when a campaign of modernization spearheaded by the newly appointed Grand Admiral Karlotta Mann began. Besides modernizing outdated weapons and systems, new avenues of unmanned air- and watercraft have been considered and the submarine fleet has been expanded. She is also responsible for the somewhat controversial decision to purchase a pair of magnetic rail accelerator cannons from the General Electromagnetics Company, mainly due to most of the funding for the development of these weapons having come from the Drambenburgian government.
