Mak'ale'o was an indigenous Garetolian mythological[1] figure and legendary tribe leader that was believed to have existed somewhere between 8,000–6,000 years ago. According to oral tradition, Mak'ale'o was believed to have been the ancestor of all native Garetolians and was sent to the island by God. Because the existence of Mak'ale'o, or even God themself, is questionable, these theories have been disproven. In a 2002 study from Mitchell Rogers, Mak'ale'o's existence was disproven by achaeological evidence from the islands earlier than the figure's supposed existence.
