The dinar (Arabic : دينار, currency symbol : SD, ISO 4217 code : SLD) is the monetary currency of Salamat and it is subdivided into 100 binat. Binat are now obsolete due to their extremely low value.

History

The Salamati Dinar was introduced on May 26 1970, replacing the Riamese hull which was the currency of Salamat for more than 140 years.

Coins

In 1970, the the coin denominations of 10 binat, 20 binat, 50 binat, 1 dinar, 2 dinars, 5 dinars and 10 dinars were introduced, with the 10 binat, 20 binat and 50 binat coins being struck in aluminium, 1 dinar and 2 dinars coins in cupronickel and 5 and 10 dinars coins in aluminium bronze. The obverse showed the value in both Standard Arabic numerals and East Arabic numerals, and the reverse showed the coat of arms of Salamat and the date of minting in Gregorian year and Hijri year. A second series was introduced in 1981, with new fractioned dinar coins in aluminum , and a new aluminium bronze 20 dinars coin. The 10 binat, 20 binat and 50 binat became obsolete. A third series was introduced in 1988, following the failure of Al Kharrabi's economic plan which brought economic stagnation and inflation, with new 1 dinar, 2 dinars, 5 dinars, 10 dinars, 20 dinars, 50 dinars and 100 dinars coins. The goverment introduced a bimetallic 200 dinars coin in 1991 due to demand and the binat were deemed obsolete in 1992.

Coins in general circulation are 5 dinars coins and higher. Lower value coins (10 binat, 20 binat, 50 binat minted between 1970 and 1981, 1/4 dinar and 1/2 dinar minted between 1981 and 1988 and 1 dinar and 2 dinars coins minted between 1970 and 2000) are deemed obsolete by the government, and these coins aren't accepted for transactions (except rare cases). All prices are rounded to the nearest 5 dinars.
