Eirene and Guillaume were photographed together, and later were confirmed to be courting. The couple was subject to intense media attention throughout their relationship, most notably for Guillaume's reputation. The couple continued courting from 1988 until their engagement in 1991. The wedding date was originally set for December of that year, but postponed until 30 May 1992, after Guillaume's expected graduation from the [[Imperial University of Lyncanestria|Imperial University]]. Their engagement tragically ended  following the death of her fiancé, Prince Guillaume, in a boating accident along the Lyncanestrian coast on 17 April 1992.
