It was also the third World Cup hosted in Besmenia after the 1986 World Cup in Laitstadt and the 1999 World Cup in Freiz. The tournament phase involved 32 teams, of which all came through qualifying competitions at the start of the event from an original 64 national teams.
31 national teams advanced through qualification competitions to join the host nation in the final tournament, with a total of 64 matches played in 6 venues- The defending champion, Zamastan, was eliminated by Allieu in the quarter-finals. Besmenia then lost to Allieu in the semi-finals, but was able to place third against Kosystan. Durnstaal won the final match 3-0 against Allieu, claiming their first World Cup title.
