The 2085 Heavenfall presidential election was held on 25 August and 8 September 2085. As no candidate won a majority in the first round, a runoff was held between incumbent President Robin Lin of the newly-formed Labor Party (LAB) and Gustavo Gutiérrez of the Liberation Movement (LMV), which Lin won by a large margin. This marked the first time in Heavenfall history that a presidential election went on to a second round.
Lin took office in July 2082 following the death of Harvey Guinto. Lin was chosen by the newly-formed Labor Party to be their presidential candidate in their first ever race. Despite speculation about a joint Lin-Wang ticket, Chancellor Michelle Wang announced her candidacy for the president in March 2085. Later that month, Lin would announce incumbent vice president and then-girlfriend Samiha Karim as their running mate. In early April 2085, conservatice Liberation Movement assemblymember Gustavo Gutiérrez issued an ultimatum to Wang: either make him her running mate or he would run for president. The next morning, Wang announced economist Demeke Ali as her running mate, and Gutiérrez announced his candidacy a few hours later. Simultaneously, he announced assemblymember Jimmy Duddridge as his running mate. A week later, Duddridge endorsed Wang, claiming he did not consent to being on the same ticket as Gutiérrez.
Despite their popularity, Lin unexpectedly failed to achieve a first-round vicotry in the election, largely credited to the fallout of the Daemans scandal and Parlor tricks affair, which implicated members of Lin's multi-party Cabinet in corruption. After her failure to make the second-round, Wang endorsed Lin and campaigned heavily against Gutiérrez.
