Satavia, officially the Republic of Satavia (Hennish: Republiek Satavia), is an Island Nation in Asteria Inferior. Located off the coast of Nuvania, Satavia (made up of the Satavian Isles and the Patrick Islands) is at the westernmost part of Asteria Inferior. Seperated from Nuvania by the Satavian Channel, Satavia also makes up a part of the mouth of the West Arucian Sea, and the point where the Arucian Sea meets the Vehemens Ocean. Geographically, Satavia is split in half by the TBD Mountains. Much of Satavia is mountainous and rugged.
Satavia is formed of seven, semi-autonomus provinces, two of which are principalities, one is a teritory (see Western Hope) and the remaining four are republics, with one, Port Hope, described as a city-state. In addition, Satavia is made up of 21 counties and one duchy.
Satavia's economy is centered around Agriculture and Industry, with it's largest exports consisting of beef, milk and sugar cane.
The most commonly spoken language in Satavia is Estmerish and Hennish, which are also the country's two official languages. Dupowek is a local language, previously classified as "extinct", but since 2002 has seen a rejuvenation. Since 2005 it has been taught in schools alongside Estmerish, Hennish and Gaullican.
Following the end of the Satavian Civil War in 1989, Satavia's head of state is the Governor, typically held by members of the upper classes, and currently held by Arthur Livingstone-Scott, the Lord Ashpoint. The head of state is a mostly ceremonial role, with very few constitutional powers, whilst the head of government is the Prime Minister of Satavia, Jago Elliot. The Governor is supposed to be nonpartisan and unbiased.
Etymology
Historical Etymology
Satavia's former name, The Hope Dominion (previously The Hoop Colony, and untill 1747, the Hoop Kolonie) derrived from the name of Satavia's biggest river, the River Hope, known by the Dupowek natives as the Avon, translated as River. The river's fertile banks lead to the settler's calling it the Rivier-Hoop, which also lead to the main settlement, situated at the mouth of the river, being called Port Hope.
Modern Terminology
Satavia is derrived from a Muisc-Dupowek first name (now extinct), Sátiva, which means 'beautiful'. First used by Kingdom of Satavia in 1900, following the February Coup, Satavia became the name of the modern-day Republic of Satavia. In Dupowek, the country's name is Dupowek - God's Land. Before Sotirianity's introduction following the Native-Pierre Agreement, the Dupowek were believed to have worshiped a pantheon of the Gods, with one "Myghtern a'n Duw", or "King of the Gods" in Estmerish. A large percentage [TBD Number] of Satavia still remains religious.
History
Pre-Historical
Satavia has been contiuously occupied by humans since the palaeolithic era, with Satavia now being infamous for it's unusual rock structures, like the neolithic [TBD], or literally, 'TBD'.
Satavian natives, namely the Dupowek, are believed to have had relatively little contact with other humans. The first known contact was with the Muisca, a tribe native to modern-day Nuvania. Historians argue about how they arrived in Satavia, given it's seperation from Nuvania in the form of the Satavian Channel.
The term 'Dupowek' as a name for the entire Island was first used in 87 BCE enscribed on ancient stones called 'Kedhel Men', translated literraly as 'Tale Stone'.
Hennish Hope
Estmerish Hope
Following the Hennish-Estmerish War, Estmerish Colonial Administrator Sir Edward Curtis was appointed as the 1st Governor of Satavia in 1747. The colony was renamed Hope Territory in August 1747, before be renamed in January 1748 as the Hope Colony. The capital was established at Port Hope, whilst a seperate, summer residence for the Governor was established at Frederick Bay, previously called Fredrick Pleg Mor in south-eastern Satavia.
In March of that year, the Great Fire of Port Hope burned down much of the Hennish-built town, meaning that most of the city had to be rebuilt. The fire destroyed St Patrick's Gate (pictured), Port Hope Cathedral, the Governor's Residence and most of the inner town, along with a sizeable portion of the docks, which remained out of action for a futher year (in the meantime, Porth Jago dock was used).
