The Mederano Peninsula (Frandit: Pensela de Mederano, Serbian: Полуострво Медерија) is a sub-region of the Astyrian continent Teudallum that encompasses several nations including Berique, Nikolia, Smertolina and parts of ViZion and the Dangish Empire. Sometimes, the island chains that compose the republics of Kobolis and Woodstead, as well as Great Nortend, are included as part of the Mederano area, depending on the source. The peninsula shares its name with the body of water which borders it to the north and west, the Mederano Sea. There is a good range of climates and terrain with mountains/alpine, prairie/plains, arid coastal regions and maritime belts. Climates and terrain not found in the Mederano Peninsula region include tundra, desert and tropical rain forest.
Toponymy
The name Mederano is a Romanisation of the Ethlorek name Mett Erhië Haanu, meaning "Land of Wide Plains". It is the first known appellation for the entire peninsula, though it initially only referred to the flatlands in eastern Nikolia. The name spread quickly with the Ethlorek migrations and was adopted by several of the cultures with whom the Ethlorekoz came in contact.
History
The Peninsula has been quite peaceful for decades, but there was some upheaval two centuries ago, with the rise of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who ruled over Greater Berique for a period of about 20 years. After tumultuous conflict and chaos that effected the whole region of Astyria, a coalition of allies that included Nikolia, Kobolis, Smertolina and some other allies, brought down Bonaparte and defeated the Beriquois armies and their Roman allies in a series of wars that threw back the invaders from each of their nations. Berique was invaded during the final two years of the conflict and the Empire was toppled when the capital, , fell. Since that time, the peninsula has been relatively peaceful, but for some involvement in the cataclysmic world conflicts during the early half of the 20th century.
