Akteenalak Tiivuq (born 19 April 1982) is a Mavean politician and member of Mava Council since 2012. She currently serves as a member of the council's cabinet, leading the Families, Communities, and Lifelong Learning portfolio.

Biography

Akteenalak was born on 19 April 1982 in Paas, the daughter of a Mavean mother and Atitlanese father. Her father, Guillem Cuéllar, was a miner who worked at the Ikillip Mine, whilst her mother, Akteenalak Taatunuk, worked as a secretary within the Mava Islands Commercial Enterprises Organisation. Aged 3, her family moved to Atitlan, where she was educated in Atlalilco. She returned to Mava aged 8, on the death of her father.

She has three brothers, one of whom is Aamailet Guillem, who is a captain in the Mines and Properties Police.

Political career

She was elected a member of Mava Council in 2012, becoming the youngest member ever elected to the council (she was 30 at the time). She was also the first openly LGBT+ person elected to the council.

Her appointment to the Families, Communities, and Lifelong Learning portfolio drew criticism from conservative elements in Mavean society, with her sexuality the main target for complaint. As a cabinet member, Akteenalak is considered to be a progressive voice; she has promoted policies to improve legal and social standing for unmarried cohabiting couples, long considered taboo in Mavean society.

Private life

Akteenalak is openly gay and lives with her partner, Kuunakik Alumak. She speaks four languages: Mavean, Almagrian, Anglish, and Gavirian.
