The government was formed following the 2021 federal election on August 8th, 2021. As prime minister candidate of the party that emerged from the election with the most votes, the Maurenmarkian governor Elisabeth Rademacher was commissioned by the Federal President Vincent von Schilling on August 10th to form a government. On August 13th, the BVP decided to enter into coalition negotiations with the SDU and GPB; this was also communicated to the Federal President on the same day. The FBBP announced on the same day that it would go into opposition. On August 14th, Rademacher also publicly announced his decision to form a coalition with the SDU and GPB. The official coalition negotiations began on August 16th. The conclusion of the negotiations was announced on September 6th, 2021. The cabinet was sworn in by Federal President von Schilling on September 9th.

Following Rademacher's resignation as Prime Minister on 12 March 2024, Vice Prime Minister Ivar Combrinck (SDU) served as Acting Prime Minister for three days, until the inception of the Pühringer cabinet.
