Background
Assassination attempt
Speaking engagement at Goodwin University
On April 21st, 2002, Camren Ellison, campaigning for reelection, attended Goodwin University in Camp Island to give a speech. During the speech, he mentioned his intent to greet a crowd of protestors, saying diverse ideas make people wiser.
Shooting
After speaking to the crowd inside, Ellison went out to greet the protestors. After roughly 30 seconds of greeting protestors, Ellison was shot twice by Alden Joseph. One of the bullets hit and later killed Braylon Christensen. Christensen returned fire, shooting Joseph several times as he collapsed. Joseph was killed instantly, while Christensen slipped into unconsiousness and died en route to the hospital.
The bullets that struck Ellison lodged in his right arm and right shoulder. While not fatal, the President lost a significant amount of blood. Ellison hit the pavement as his security detail scrambled to cover him, and a notable bruise under his left eye was visible for at least two weeks after the shooting. Ellison later remarked about the bruise that "this shiner came from my bodyguards."
Ellison was picked up and hurried into the Presidential motorcade, which evacuated him directly to the Camp Memorial Hospital a few blocks away.
Aftermath
After the assassination attempt, Ellison was rushed to Camp Memorial Hospital. The First Lady Kimberly Ellison was in Tofino at the time, and flew to Camp Island immediately. The Speaker of the Chamber Dani Hawthorn was authorized as Acting President at 12:38 pm., but Ellison was returned a majority of executive powers less than an hour later. After emergency surgery where the bullet was removed, both the President and the First Lady boarded Zian Prime 0 and returned to Tofino, where the President was given more extensive treatment at Newman Wood General Hospital. Ellison remained in the hospital for nine days, and was released on April 30th, where he resumed all the duties of the presidency.
