Jarnarna (or the iron islands in English) was the most southern nation in ancient pre-unification Scandera and while Imerians originally were the people that ruled the inner sea and the rivers so were the people from jarnarna the people that ruled the open sea and their longships were more than a match for both Vedians and Imerians during each of the two nations eras of great power just as they were instrumental for the victory on the seas for the Stjärnkhrones during the Stjärnhrkone-Erathian war.

Even today so is the realm known for it's strong naval presence and most regiments raised here are naval infantry regiments rather than standard army ones. While it is not filled with the large fertile lands that the rest of Scandera has so is jarnarna as the name suggests filled with large iron deposits even if it also produces coal, copper and silver in the mines that are spread out over the large island.

Geography

the image of large plains are something that most people associates with the islands

Instead of the large dark forests and golden fields that stretches over most of Scandera so does Jarnarna mostly consist of one large unbroken alvar that slowly changes into the mountains and forests that is exists on the mainland in the central regions of the main island.

The cliffy coastline that have historically been a troublesome obstacle for sailors surrounds most of the island which makes it hard for ships to navigate through it even if Öborga viken, the bay that Öborga is built around is one of the largest exceptions to this rule.

Despite the fact that the islands are in general flat so are there still differences in height and the highest point in the islands, the mountain named Irntaken or "the iron tooth", raises as high as 1232 meters above sea level while the lowest point stretches down 20 meters below sea level.

Just as most Scaderan lands so does a large network of rivers spread out over the island that have been used as a means of transportation for untold centuries and the longest of these are called Salkfaldern that stretches for almost 200 kilometres.

Climate

Despite being located so far to the south so have Jarnarna often thanks to the wind and the cold sea cold short summers followed by long snow filled winters. Temperatures varies between 15 Celsius in the summer and - 20 in the winter as a general rule.

Flora and fauna

The largest amount of flora comes in the shape of wildflowers that covers most of the islands and especially stonecrop, dropwort, Artemisia, Shrubby Cinquefoil, Common spotted orchid and kidney vetch are commonly found.

However animals are rather lacking as the majority of the mammal species are smaller ones like moles, rabbits, hares, voles even if larger ones as sheep, goats and wild horses have also made their home on the islands. Reptilians as sea wyverns and various kinds of snakes can only be found on the islands even if the wyverns tends to be much smaller than their large mountain cousins on the mainland.

History

In the times before that were they also known as raiders that often pestered both free Imerian, Erathian and Sydlänska kingdoms and even attacked Karmanjaka, Vedian and the northern iceplains when the opportunity presented itself. While such raids often resulted in punitive raids and even large scale attacks from the Imerians, Erathians and the Sydländerna so did the islands stand tall and proud and even resisted the Erathian cleansing war against the islands.

However with the death of Harald auf Jarnfad, the last free jarn jarl, in 812 so did the islands experience internal turmoil and the nobility started to war amongst one another for the crown. One of the strongest pretenders, lady Greta auf Maltungna, did however look to the north for allies and send a message to Imerbürg where she asked for the current high kings brothers hand in marriage in exchange for the support of the Imerians.

It took almost a year of preparations in secret before a large Imerian fleet with support of the auf Maltunga fleet became the first fleet that managed to land on the islands without being heavily harassed by Jarnfada longships. With her new Imerian allies and their heavy infantry and cavalry that preformed better than the much lighter local troops in proper battles so were Greta auf Maltunga quickly able to claim the throne as Greta auf Stjarnkhrone and her son swore vassalage to his uncle when he became the next Jarl which brought the islands into the growing Stjarnkhrone domains while the islanders joined the war against Erathia.

In the civil war so were the local troops too busy crushing communist uprisings to actively support the royalist forces on the mainland for most of the war. However in the later stages of the war when it was obvious that the people's confederacy would lose the war so did the warfare on the islands die down enough to allow the islanders to start with raids against confederate strongholds and manufacturing centres.
