Following the [[Atklāšana]] mission he never flew another space mission. He became the Director of the National Cosmonaut Centre. He was initially banned from flying due to fear of an accident but was cleared to once again fly fighter jets in March 1968. He died a few weeks letter during his first flight since the Atklāšana mission.
