Kanakaalaq "Kana" Mulimaajit Tukeelat (born 4 March 1969) is a Mavean politician currently serving as a member of Mava Council since the 2014 election. Since 2023, he has served as chairman of the Committee on Administration.

Biography

Kana was born in Paas, Mava in 1969. He attended Paas School and later attended Oscar Pedrero College, a boarding school in Atitlan. He started studying civil engineering at the Imperial Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Atitalaquiac, although he ended his studies and returned to Mava.

He became a journalist for Uujutajap Paas Kamaqjuukutmuqtun (Kamaqjuukut's Paas Newspaper). In 2000 he became chief editor. He became a freelance journalist in 2003, but continued to work for Uujutajap until his election to Mava Council in 2014.

Kana was elected to Mava Council in the 2014 general election. He previously sought election in the 2011 election, but did not win enough votes. Following his election, he became a member of the Committee on Administration.

In 2016, he became embroiled in a criminal case that achieved international notoriety. On 12 January, police arrested him after was found with a concrete mixer, poetry books, glue, and three pigeons. His arrest for "lewd activity" resulted in his suspension from the Council pending investigation. His name was revealed publicly following a court ruling on 11 February and he was brought to trial on 21 February. He was charged with endangering wildlife, indecent exposure, trespassing and misuse of property. He was found guilty only of trespassing and misuse of property and fined. He retained his council set despite attempts to expel him.

In 2023 he was elected chairman of the Committee on Administration.

Personal life

Kana is married with two children. He is a Protestant.
