Colonial Era

Modern Era

Pavonistade supported the United Kingdom and the Allied Powers during the First World War. The country was subject to the impacts of the Spanish Flu and the Great Depression. In the Second World War, Pavonistade sided with Allied countries and declared war on the Axis countries. The war occurred in the midst of the Pavonistadian Industrial Revolution, and the country played a recognizable economic and military role in the Allied war effort.

After the Second World War, Pavonistade helped found the United Nations and engaged in international conflicts such as the Korean War. Pavonistade sided with the United States during the Cold War and became a member of NATO. While the Pavonistadian government is divided over the amount of support appropriate for the United States, Pavonistade experienced several cultural shifts such as the counterculture of the 1960's.

After the end of the Cold War, Pavonistade remained a prominent ally of the United States and European powers. It has maintained a cautious presence in conflicts such as the War on Terror and insurgencies in West African countries. Despite an semi-interventionist foreign policy, Pavonistade has engaged both in peacekeeping operations and in offensive operations (e.g. intervention against ISIL).

Pavonistade is labelled as an emerging power with influence in the regional and, to an extent, international stage. Climate change, environmental degradation, economic disparities, changing social demographics (e.g. age) and continued cultural shifts are some of the issues currently faced by Pavonistadians.

Eric Maximus Oppenheim (born July 20, 1957) is the current President of Pavonistade. Prior to his presidency, he was the Vice President from March 16, 2013 to February 23, 2015 and he served as a Member of the Parliament for three years starting on March 16, 2009.

Oppenheim was born in Saelmann and graduated from the University of Vadopol. He was Vice Mayor of Saelmann from 1997 to 2005. He was elected as Mayor of the aforementioned city in the latter year, and he was inaugurated for the occupation. Oppenheim was a Member of Parliament from August 20, 2009 to March 16, 2013 after he was offered the position in June.

In the 2013 Presidential Campaign, Oppenheim ran with Mattheu Azurite and he became the Vice President. After Azurite suffered from a thrombotic stroke and died, Oppenheim was inaugurated as the President of the Pavonistadian Provinces on February 23, 2015.

Early life

Eric Oppenheim was born on July 20, 1957 in the Saelmann Hospital Center. His parents were Alcsandeur and Helen Oppenheim, the former operating as a municipal councilmember and the latter as a political journalist. Oppenheim is one of the three children in the family that also includes older brother James (b. December 1, 1955) and younger sister Fiona (b. March 25, 1959).

The Oppenheim family is of the upper-class, allowing Eric to attain education without much trouble. He attended the Southend Primary School before studying at the Caprara Secondary Institute. Oppenheim graduated from the latter school in 1975 and subsequently he was enrolled in the University of Vadopol, where he studied for more than four years and he received a degree in political science. The acquisition of such a degree is perhaps inspired by the occupation of Oppenheim's parents, although he never explicitly detailed the reasons for his pursue.

During university studies, Oppenheim opted for Volunteer Service and served for the minimum period of 6 months. After enrollment in the University of Vadopol, Oppenheim returned to Saelmann and began his political career.

Political career

Saelmann Municipal Council

Oppenheim's first political career put him as one of the fifty council members of the Saelmann municipal council, starting in 1989. He was an independent before he was associated with the Republican Party. Alongside with information from relatives, the alignment with the Capitalists describes about Oppenheim's original political positions. He gradually became more centrist.

Oppenheim was a council member for ten years. Months before he ceased his role as a council member, he ran for Vice Mayor of Saelmann and his partner, a candidate for Mayor, was Marc Laprede. The Republican duo won the municipal elections in 1997 and Oppenheim took his office on July 20 of the same year. They won the 2001 elections and retained their positions, but Laprede was no longer eligible to run for the 2005 elections. Oppenheim defected to the Democratic Party as the party's stances more-closely reflected Oppenheim's personal beliefs. He was selected as a candidate for the Democratic Party, and he attained a majority in the elections. He served as mayor of his home city for over three years, and he concluded his term on May 25, 2009 (just before the next municipal elections) after he was offered a seat in the Parliament.

Pavonistadian Parliament & Cabinet

Oppenheim reached Pavonistadeck and his term as a Member of Parliament began on August 20, 2009. By 2012, he was eligible to become the President or Vice President of Pavonistade, and he took the opportunity to run for the latter position. He ran along with Mattheu Azurite, who was seeking Presidency, and they won the 2013 general elections.

Oppenheim was sworn in as Vice President on March 16, 2013 following over one month of government reshuffling. Though he did not receive as much attention as President Azurite, Oppenheim was well-known for several moves such as declaring war on the Ocelot Isles in February 2015 in place of the President.

Presidency

On February 19, 2015, Azurite suffered a thrombotic stroke and was in critical condition at the time of his arrival in the Pavonistadeckian General Hospital. Oppenheim was made interim President before news broke that Azurite died on February 22. Oppenheim was inaugurated as the Prsident of Pavonistade on February 23, making him one of the three people to take Presidency following a predecessor's death, assassination, or severe incapacitation.

Because Azurite's term ended prematurely, Oppenheim is eligible only for two subsequent presidential terms. His presidency saw the establishment of a parliamentary override standard for presidential vetoes (2/3 majority), extension of protection for sexual minorities and refugees, withdrawal of Pavonistade from the Esquarian Union, and entry into the Esquarian Community.

Oppenheim announced his candidacy for the 2017 election on April 17, 2016.

Political positions

Eric Oppenheim has been described as being ideologically distant from other prominent Pavonistadian politicians. He is described as a Third Way politician in support of economic intervention and a mixed economy. His positions on various policies such as Internet surveillance have gained attention because of its difference with the positions of the Democratic or Republican Parties. As with numerous left-wing and centrist politicians, Oppenheim rejects compulsory military service and desires a cut in defense spending levels.

Oppenheim had spoken regarding his positions, stating "[...] I am going forward, and only forward, for not just me but for all of the country, for this is the renewed way forward."

Personal Life

The official residence of Eric Oppenheim is designated as the Presidential Palace. Like most Pavonistadian Presidents he has a private residence, which is located in his home city of Saelmann. The Saelmann private residence is one of the possible vacation sites of Oppenheim.

Oppenheim's current wife is Eileen Mirandes and both were married since May 10, 1998. They had a son, Payton Oppenheim, who was born on June 15, 2000 and is currently living in the Presidential Palace alongside his parents. Eric Oppenheim was married to a previous wife, Gwen Wiliemns, from December 1, 1987 to August 19, 1989. Before divorce the couple had a daughter, Sarah Leions, who is not residing within the Presidential Palace.

Oppenheim expresses an interest in classical and rock and roll music, association football, and soft science fiction.
