The 2018 Joyonghean Christmas Eve Attacks was a series of predetermined civilian attacks committed by the Nanja Republic. Totaling four attacks, cells of the Nanjan commandos and agents committed acts of terrorism upon Tower Sky of the Sokju complex in Yeolcheon, the Kuchon City District in the same city, Pusan, Masan, Sarihung and Daejeon.
Fatalities from the attacks numbered 19,477, making the terrorist event the deadliest to ever occur in Joyonghea and in the history of Eordis. From this, it was nicknamed the "Winter Tragedy" by Allied news outlets; in Joyonghean, as it was coined, the terrorist attack was called Gyeoulbigeug (겨울비극).
Background
Attacks
Yeolcheon
Tower Sky
At 10:24 PM, a hijacked Joyonghean F-15K appeared over Yeolcheon airspace and fired an Speartip air-launched ballistic missile at the Sokju Riverside Tower. The impact obliterated Floors 52-60, the latter being five floors below the End-Millenium Christmas Party. Despite the lower floors being evacuated, the missile impact obliterated all of the stairways, trapping the entire party and the 400 guests and personnel above.
A minute later, bombs exploded on the lobby and 2nd and 3rd floors of Tower Sky.
Five minutes after the explosions, a second F-15K fired an AGM-88 HARM onto the rooftop of the Riverside Tower, killing 52 guests.
Twenty minutes later, Jae-hui and his detachment, disguised themselves as a rescue unit, were called in to respond to a rooftop rescue on Tower Sky after their command received a 113 call from Assemblyman Ch'ae Se-yeon. At 10:26, their helicopters landed and they occupied the rooftop. Soon after, Jae-hui ordered his detachment to head down and execute survivors. Panic ensued, and soon after, Jae-hui occupied the partyroom, where Se-yeon was apparently abducted. While keeping them occupied, Jae-hui ordered his men to plant charges onto support beams in order for the building to collapse.
Members from Task Force 853 and Task Force 141 were called in suppress the Nanjan assailants and rescue the survivors. Soon after, they were able to defuse the charges, mow down most of the assailant party, and evacuate most of the survivors. On the rooftop, they encountered Jae-hui and his company and an ensuing firefight commenced. Afterwards, the Nanjans were suppressed, with Jae-hui falling from the Tower. Despite managing to their job, the Task Force commandos were not able to fill in their helicopter, issuing a request for other rescue helicopters to pick the rest of them up.
Kuchon City District
Five minutes after police and fire trucks were dispatched to douse the blaze at the Tower with almost full presence, four SUVs manned by Nanjan soldiers and agents by drove onto from five different streets within the Kuchon City District and fired upon civilians. Led by Col. Muk Sun-young, two of the SUVs were tasked with infiltrating the Royal Palace and kill off the Royal Family, while the other two were to keep shooting civilians with their Type 58s, and detonate their SUVs in random locations outside the district and extract themselves to the port for pickup.
Pusan and Masan Brynyl Attacks
Departing from Daegu Air Base, two hijacked F-15Ks made way towards their respective targets of Pusan and Sarihung. The Pusan plane was piloted by P'yong Byeong-cheol, the Masan plane Tong Song-hyon, an Airman First Class in the Nanjan People's Air Force. Their arsenal included four Brynyl bombs and one Speartip missile.
At 10:50 PM, Byeong-cheol's plane dropped three Brynyl bombs on three targeted locations, and Song-hyon, two bombs two locations approximately one minute afterwards. Word spread from civil and military authorities about the presence of the gas, and evacuations were made. Although, with no clear direction as to where the gas originated and was headed, panic ensued, leading to a rising count of deaths.
Sarihung
After the bombs were dropped on Pusan and Masan, Senior Agent T'ae Se-yoon executed his attack and ordered his agents to move in on City Hall and the Geumnamno downtown area. At 11:02 PM, a truck with propane tanks crashed into City Hall and exploded, killing a number of occupants attending a Christmas party.
Four minutes later, a car carrying three agents parked in the downtown area and opened fire on civilians.
Daejeon
Receiving the same confirmation, Senior Agent Maeng Hyeon-jun dispatched his agents to deploy in the downtown area to drop off bombs in the Daejeon Metro, the Government Complex and the Noeun Wholesale Market. Two commando cells located in Jung-gu and Dong-gu were then ordered to execute their attacks upon the their districts and converge in Gyeryong in the southwest.
At 11:07, the Metro bomb exploded, leaving 45 dead. At 11:12, the Wholesale Market bomb exploded, killing 34 people.
After the bombs exploded, both commando cells executed their attack on Jung-gu and Dong-gu. The Jung-gu car moved towards Seo-gu, while the Dong-gu car moved into the northeastern part of the downtown area.
While the car attacks were occurring, the bomb at the Government Complex detonated at 11:28, killing Governor Pin Hee-chul and injuring Mayor Myo Tae-ran.
Attempted Reroute to Yeolcheon
After the last Brynyl bomb was dropped in Pusan, the F-15K piloted by Song-hyon was redirected to Yeolcheon to fire his ballistic missile onto the Riverside Tower. At 11:58 PM, his plane arrived in Yeolcheon airspace and his missile was deployed before being shot down.
Allied Response
About 10 mins after the dropping of the first Brynyl bombs, the Allied forces stationed at Okita Hanamura Barracks, Roy Peterson Joint Operations Headquarters Command, and the Namgung Wook-yun Joint Air Force Base at Samcheok raised the Red Alert status. As a result, all allied forces immediately were deployed to Yeolcheon. Several Anti-Air emplacements were raised. The RAF, RZAF, and the RNAAF released fighter-interceptors to scout and patrol for any Imperial planes over Joyonghean air space.
When it was confirmed that Brynyl was being spread through Masan and Pusan, squadrons from the Joyonghean Sovereign Air Force's 11th and 16th Fighter Wings were scrambled to the two cities carrying neutralizing agents. Although, deliveries of the agents took twenty minutes, leading to delays in deployment. After arriving, the squadrons were able to quell the situation in less than four minutes.
In Daejeon, more members from Task Force 853 alongside soldiers and humvees from nearby Tae Shin Memorial Army Base in the southwest volunteered to help the city police out. Arriving at 11:38, they managed to give pursuit to a Nanjan-driven car that was exiting Taepyeong-dong.
Aftermath
The Joyonghean army captured the hijacker.
In Daejeon, the car that was sighted in Taepyeong-dong was disabled with its occupants captured by Task Force 853. They were held in the cells of the Tae Shin Army Base.
International Reactions
The Communist Party of Guinea praised the attacks, issuing a communique stating that "2019 would be the year that a great intervention will come and that the year will be the year that Communism will finally rule."
The Gyeoulbigeug Effect
The most resounding effect of the attacks was the Gyeoulbigeug Effect, named after the event's moniker. The effect was characterized with public outrage and the national resolve from each of the Allied nations to hasten the end of the Crisis.
