Erma Barrows v. Makko Oko is a case that was decided in the Emperor's Court Of Makko Oko, by the Ministry Of Justice's Directorate Appeals Division regarding the recently enacted legislation at the time, the Wages Guidance Act, which officially established a national minimum wage and universal basic income.
Background
Erma Barrows v. Makko Oko was a civil suit filed by Erma Barrows, a major slave owner, and her lawyer, Brandon Gates, seeking an injunction against the Wages Guidance Act for the reasons of it being an "Unconstitutional Act Of Legislation". It was filed on July 2nd, 2022, with an official ruling on July 5th, 2022. The case had John Verrill representing the state within the Emperor's Prosecution Service, who has never lost a case. They had almost lost this case, but due to government intervention, didn't.
Opinion Of The Court
Originally, Chief Judge Karen Hall of the Shileans branch of the Emperor's Court had been presiding over the case, until the Ministry Of Justice took over, causing a 1-2 day delay in the final ruling. The original ruling by Judge Karen Hall was handed down on July 4th, 2022, with that ruling being against the state, and in favor of Erma Barrows. The Ministry Of Justice ordered the closure of the case and a nullification of rulings due to a violation of national sovereignty, and Karen nullified her ruling and appealed the decision to the Directorate Appeals Division, which kept their original order, and they ended up handing down the final ruling, being in favor of the state.
The ruling given by the Directorate Appeals Division was done at the Supreme Court Of Makko Oko in the capital city of Opposh, with the seal and approval of a Supreme Court judge.
Judge Hall's Opinion
"Article 5 of the Basic Rights Of Makko Oko clearly stipulates a restriction on non-enumerated rights, and the Wages Guidance Act was not such enumerated. Therefore, slaves shall not be able to receive a wage for their servitude."
