Education

Eleanor, Princess Royal (Eileanora Alara Adenora Sara Maria; b. 9 September 1992) is heir presumptive to the Gelonian throne. Eleanor is the eldest surviving child of King Arthur XI, and his first child by Caroline Zuria.

Eleanor graduated from University of the Imperial Coast in 2014, and earned a degree in PPE. She also took classes at St. Riothamus College, a Gelonian language university located in Cantabrigia. Since 2015, Eleanor has served as the Chairperson for the Gelonian Society of Arts, and the Royal Foundation. In 2015, she married George of Keld; they have four children.

Family and early life

Eleanor was born at Castelo Lavandula, in Durnovaria, to then Arthur, Duke of Oxonia and his second wife Caroline Zuria. At the time of her birth, Eleanor was afforded the title Princess of Oxonia due to her father's status as heir apparent to the Gelonia. She was baptized into the Church of Gelonia at Santo Tugdualus Basilica in Oxonia by a local bishop. Her godparents are Raymond Zuria (her mother's brother); Elena Voor (Raymond's wife); Nina, Electress of Vandalia (her father's sister); and Karl III, Elector of Vandalia (Nina's husband).

Eleanor and her family primarily resided at Palatia d'Lannionna, in Oxonia for much of her childhood. She regularly visited her extended family in Ghant throughout her upbringing, including her mother's family in Zuria and relatives in Ghish.

Education

Eleanor attended St. Corentino boarding school for the first half of her secondary schooling, with her last two years of secondary education handled by private tutors. She applied to a number of universities, including colleges University of Haenna, University of Abaza, University of the Imperial Coast, and the University of Rovan. After a gap year, Eleanor enrolled at University of the Imperial Coast, in Ghish, Ghant. Eleanor resided at the Imperial Palace as a guest of the Ghantish imperial family in 2011, and following that at a Ghish-based townhouse located near campus that was purchased for her by her grandfather. While at Imperial Coast, Eleanor was a member of student arts and ballet organizations, as well as a number of local Gelonian student organizations. She was often seen at university sporting events, and regularly attended Ghish Imperials games.

She did not enroll in classes for the fall 2012 semester following the death of her older brother Arthur, but resumed her studies in early 2013 as a guest student at St Riothamus, a small private Gelonian-language university located in northwestern Gelonia. Eleanor returned to Imperial Coast for the fall 2013 semester and graduated a year later with a PPE degree in 2014. She earned a minor degree in Gelonian.

Named heir

On 22 September 2012, Eleanor's older brother, it was announced that Arthur, Duke of Oxonia had died following an early morning automobile accident in the Redones district of Oxonia. At the time of Arthur's death, Eleanor was a student at the University of the Imperial Coast. She promptly returned to Durnovaria, and did not return to Imperial Coast for classes after her brother's funeral.

With Arthur's death, King Arthur XI was left with no male heirs, and according to the agnatic succession precedents established at the 1945 Gelonian Great Council the role of heir to the throne fell to Eleanor's uncle, Prince Riocus, Duke of Roazoha. However, unlike previous instances, there was no official announcement or recognition of Riocus' position as heir presumptive.

It was not until 10 June 2013, that an heir was recognized. During a nationally televised announcement from Castelo Lavandula, King Arthur announced that Eleanor was named heir by order of the King with immediate effect. In his national address and royal proclamation, King Arthur granted Eleanor the title of [heir apparent title here], and that an investiture ceremony would be held on 23 July 2013, at Basilica Sancta Brigida, in Durnovaria. A royal writ was issued to all clan chiefs, members of the Seanado, elected members of the Tinolea, and key government ministers to appear at Sancta Brigida for the investiture and prepare to provide an oath of fealty to Eleanor and recognize her as heir.

The decision to issue a royal writ was not without controversy, due in large part to the royal proclamation breaking from long standing royal tradition of a prohibition on, and the 1945 precedent, against female inheritance of the throne. Some members of the Seanado and Tinolea voiced their displeasure publicly, and initially suggested that they may not appear despite the royal writ. Legislation was introduced by some members of each legislative chamber to formally change succession practices, and others introduced legislation to prevent Eleanor's succession and reaffirm the 1945 Great Council precedent. Representatives of [Justice Department] urged both chambers to drop any legislation regarding succession, asserting that it would have no legal mandate. As of 2023 no legislation regarding succession has been passed by either legislative chamber, often failing to exit the committee stage.

On 23 July 2013, all chiefs of clans and elected members of the Tinolea were called to Basilica Sancta Brigida for the investiture ceremony. A brief military procession lead from [palace] to Basilica Sancta Brigida, and following a church service, Eleanor was officially invested as heir apparent and [title of heir]. All clan chiefs and government officials provided oaths of fealty to Eleanor and recognized her as heir apparent. Chiefs and government officials also reaffirmed their oaths to the King. The day was made a bank holiday, and a celebration ball was held in Eleanor's honor that night. On July 24, Eleanor embarked on a nationwide tour to meet with local leaders and the people. Then unmarried, the media referred to her national tour as a "marriage tour." Her tour ended on until September 9, and Eleanor resumed her education at Imperial Coast the following week.
