Makko Oko Box Office, also known as MKBO, is one of the main premium pay television movie networks in the Empire Of Makko Oko. The Makko Oko Box Office was founded by Erica Knudsen, wife of a signatory to the Republic's Constitution, Julius Knudsen, on August 2nd, 1992, upon the first official establishment of a nationwide cable TV infrastructure. Originally being founded as a private company, the Makko Okoan Government, that being Julius himself, saw the potential future worth of the company and offered his wife to convert it into a government-owned corporation, to which she accepted, as long as she got to keep her place as CEO, which she did, until August 7th, 1998, when she passed away to breast cancer.
The Makko Oko Box Office is the oldest company founded within the nation to still exist today, currently being a public broadcasting company owned by the government.
History
Founding Of The Box Office
Before the inception of the Makko Oko Box Office on August 2nd, 1992, there was a complete lack of movie channels or broadcasts within the nation. This, coupled with the lack of knowledge on international films, led to a gaping hole that needed to be filled. That's where Erica Knudsen comes in. Erica was the wife of President Julius Knudsen, the very first President of the Republic Of Makko Oko, who was also a signatory to the Constitution, was one of those studious people who wanted to know about and watch the international movies.
Erica brought up the idea to her husband, Julius, who thought the idea was great, and was quoted in local news at the time as saying "The idea of the Makko Oko Box Office will be able to plant the seeds in the ground for domestic film production" which at the time of the company's inception, had been little to none, due to the official incorporation of the nation's government only happening 2 years prior, and the main developments of the nation going towards construction companies, TV and internet infrastructure, among other things.
Originally, the Makko Oko Box Office was a news publication, and also a physical office, that would find out and report on international movie releases, review and rate them, and also buy and resell them to local movie theatres. This all changed on November 3rd, 1993, when the Makko Oko Box Office officially completed development of their very first TV channel, simply known as "The Box Office", and started airing that same day at 4:00 PM, with the first ever program broadcast on the channel being a Makko Oko Box Office exclusive TV program named "The Movie Review" which was a cable TV version of the original newspaper format of international movie reviews. The rights to broadcast international movies was quickly obtained after the beginning of the network, with the first program being "The Chaos Of The Ferwerter Civil War", a documentary on the civil war that happened in the Controlist Ferwerter Union.
Bringing In The Government
By April 19th, 1995, the domestic movie industry had grown 1000% overall, and for every 15 movies released within the nation, 1 would be a hit. Additionally, "The Box Office" TV channel had grown in subscribers ever since its introduction in 1993, within 2 years attaining 29,000 subscribers. For a long time, "The Box Office" had been essentially a free-to-air channel, with nobody having to pay for its services, that is, until June 2nd, 1996, when the Makko Oko Box Office had faced the threat of a class action internationally by major movie producers and governments, with many also threatening to cut the international movie supply off for the company, unless changes are made and royalties are established. At the time, royalties had not existed for TV networks, as they were still a slightly new concept, along with the concept of movie channels.
Within days, CEO and Founder Erica Knudsen had reestablished "The Box Office" TV channel as a premium TV channel, no longer free-to-air, that would cost $17 SLO's a month in order to continue using the service, with royalties being established on a per-viewer basis of $0.50/viewer. In the long run, this appeared profitable, and it made the threats of lawsuits disappear, and "The Box Office" continued to live on.
July 11th, 1996 would be when the Makko Oko Box Office would be changed forever. The Makko Okoan Government, mainly the Department Of Labor and President Julius Knudsen, had noticed the low amount of employees, coupled with the high profit margins and huge subscriber base, which at the time, was one of the biggest cable networks in the nation, and had wanted in on the gains. Julius Knudsen had spoken to his wife Erica about potentially making it a government-owned corporation instead of a publicly-owned one that Erica had originally founded it as, and Erica was open to the idea, seeing as Julius was the current President, but she had a stipulation of continuing to be the CEO, with which Julius graciously accepted. The transition to a government-owned corporation happened soon afterwards from July 12th to July 14th 1996. The reason for this conversion remains to be seen, but some do suspect that Julius wanted to alleviate some of the burden that Erica had from running the company, with also being able to give it tax breaks due to being a government corporation.
Death Of Erica Knudsen
With the Makko Oko Box Office now under government operation and control, and with Erica still at the helm being the CEO, she had been rather more relaxed than when the Makko Oko Box Office was a public company, however, she still showed signs of stress. At some points during her tenure under the government's control, she would take weeks off at a time, and nobody, not even Julius, her husband, seemed to know why, with Julius going as far as to answer to a potential controversy and rumor of her having an affair, saying "I trust and believe in my wife to not be unfaithful to the point of marriage. I would go as far as to say I trust them like I trust in democracy, which is always tested, yet never fails. She's going through some issues right now, but she will work them out in due time."
This all made much more sense when on February 5th, 1998, Erica publicly announced that she had stage 3 breast cancer, and with the ever-more-developing healthcare infrastructure, she had to go internationally to get treatment, which would be quite costly. After the announcement, people started becoming outraged due to the thought that she would use public taxpayer funds to pay for the treatment, due to their marriage with the President at the time, which Julius strongly pushed back on. Nobody truly knows if she ever got treatment, or how she paid for it, but on August 7th, 1998, mere days after the 6th year anniversary of the Makko Oko Box Office's inception, she passed away to breast cancer at her home at the capital building, seemingly in her sleep according to autopsy reports.
After her death, President Julius Knudsen, now a widowed husband, officially announced that the Makko Oko Box Office would be headed up by him himself, to continue his wife's dream and business. Many saw this as a conflict of interest and as a plague upon civil service duties, but they were mostly ignored by Julius. Julius continued to run the Makko Oko Box Office until the Civil Transition War, when he was kidnapped and assassinated by the Makko Oko Anti-Poverty Forces as a failed bargaining chip.

Background
MKBO
MKBO is the flagship and primary channel of the Makko Oko Box Office and officially started broadcasting on November 3rd, 1993, first starting as a FTA (Free To Air) channel simply named, "The Box Office", but in 1996 becoming a paid channel and no longer being free to broadcast. MKBO originally broadcasted MKBO-exclusive shows such as "The Movie Review" and international movies, but quickly expanded to domestic movies once some of the first movies came out around 1997, when the Makko Oko Box Office started buying those and broadcasting them as well.
The channel name change to simply MKBO, which is the company's acronym, was done after the government took control of the company in 1996, and upon approval of Erica Knudsen, who was CEO and Founder at the time. This was seen as a way to gradually expand operations in the future, and along with that, to make the name more friendly and recognizable, especially to the company itself.
Content Aired
MKBO airs first-run and blockbuster feature films, original series and made-for-cable movies, sports-focused magazine and documentary series, comedy and occasional concert specials, and documentaries. The channel also airs weekly premieres of recent theatrical or new MKBO original movies, marketed as the "MKBO Movie Premiere", on most Saturday nights (usually at 8:00 PM).
MKBO2
MKBO2 started broadcasting on November 25th, 1999, which was a year after Erica Knudsen, CEO and Founder until their death in August of 1998, had died to breast cancer, and 3 months after the Makko Oko Box Office's 7th year anniversary. MKBO2 was started due to an idea of how to obtain more of a reach and grip within the nation, and on how to retain subscribers. MKBO2 was designed to show programs that were shown on the primary MKBO channel earlier in the day, later, to give more people time to watch programs they like, and to limit frustration with missing programs, which at the time, DVR service was almost non-existent, meaning everything had to be recorded on VHS or watched live.
Content Aired
MKBO2 airs content previously aired on the primary MKBO channel (also known as a timeshift channel), along with the MKBO Movie Premieres block, which unlike the primary channel, airs on Friday mornings, typically at 7:00 AM.
Services
Television
The Makko Oko Box Office provides multiple channels in both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD), to TV providers within the nation. The channels offered depend on the specific provider and the agreements made with the Makko Oko Box Office, but most of the time, all of the channels are provided. Due to them being premium channels, most of the time you have to buy them separate from your TV package, but in the most expensive TV packages, they tend to come included.

MKBO2 |
MKBO's secondary channel; MKBO2 was launched on November 25th, 1999, 3 months after the 7th year anniversary of the Makko Oko Box Office. MKBO2 is considered to be a later version of MKBO, as it airs movies and content that had aired earlier on the original and flagship, MKBO channel, in addition to its own content and blocks. MKBO2 also has the "MKBO Movie Premiere" on Friday mornings as opposed to Saturday nights on the main MKBO channel, typically starting at 7:00 AM. |

MKBO Makuri |

MKBO Makuri was launched as a replacement to MKBO International, which was taken off the air due to the new national language being codified. No other MKBO channel airs programming in Makuri, hence why the Makko Oko Box Office launched MKBO Makuri. Much like MKBO and MKBO2, MKBO Makuri does also have a "MKBO Movie Premiere" block, which airs on Friday night, typically starting at 8:00 PM, as opposed to MKBO2's block which airs on Friday mornings. |
MKBO Zone |
Launched on June 24th, 2001, MKBO Zone airs anything that is not aired on any other MKBO channel, except for MKBO Makuri, in that Makuri-language programs are only shown on that channel. This includes unrated movies and programs, programs that may be illegal if broadcasted on other channels, international programs not shown regularly on MKBO and adult programs (Broadcasting discontinued after the ban on adult entertainment was instated). It was the only MKBO channel to ever air adult content. MKBO Zone in other nations tends to be more freely expressed than the native channel itself. |
Online
With the rise of internet streaming platforms in the 2010's, the Makko Oko Box Office launched the MKBO Online service on November 22nd, 2016, to allow people to watch and peruse the entire library of MKBO content, both original and third party, and watch it whenever they felt free to, without the need for TV service. MKBO Online launched with a price tag of $15 a month, without live MKBO channel broadcasts and with no ads. This all changed on February 12th, 2018, when the Makko Oko Box Office officially announced the launch of the "MKBO Live" feature on the MKBO Online service, which allows subscribers to view any MKBO channel live, as if they were watching it on TV. The price tag didn't change from this feature introduction.
Pricing Structure
MKBO Online uniquely has no ad-included tier, and has the simplest pricing structure of any other online streaming service in the nation, simply having a $15 a month price tag, and no other options and no addons.

MKBO Movie Premieres
MKBO Movie Premieres are a block on some MKBO channels, mainly the primary channel and MKBO2, that airs recent theatrical or new MKBO original movies, along with never-before-broadcasted content new to the channel. This block is also known as MKBO Movie Introductions, since the block is where movies and content not before broadcasted are first aired before becoming regular content and broadcasted elsewhere. The time that the block airs is dependent on the channel itself and is not universal.
