This article covers the political structures used by the nations in Pardes. These include Federation, Confederation, Federacy and Unitary, as well as any combinations thereof. Political structures vary from country to country.

Political Structures are defined by how a nation operates in regards to two fields commonly called Decentralized and Centralized Government. Decentralized Governments have more power directed or held within administrative units such as states or provinces; or even down to the level of city states. Centralized government have more power directed or held in the hands of a central authority - this is contrasted to a Hegemony in which the latter involves a Sphere of Influence and the relation of several sovereign states dominated by one more powerful state. A Hegemon can be in fact a decentralized state - as well as an Empire.

The most common forms of political structures are that of Confederations, Federations, and Unitary states. The less common forms are Confederacies and Federacies. Confederations are at the far end of the scale classified as Decentralized - Confederations are defined by a very weak central authority and very strong political units that effectively govern themselves and maintain more of a loose set of treaties with each other [i.e. Swiss Confederation] Confederations are usually referred to as a Confederal system. Unitary states are at the opposite far end of the scale classified as Centralized - Unitary states are defined by a very strong government in which the central authority may have complete power over its political units and passes laws or adjusts administrative powers to the political units at any time it likes, taking and giving power when necessary [i.e. United Kingdom] Unitary states are usually referred to as a National/Unitary/Central system.

Federations are typically perfectly in the middle, both the central authority and the political units share powers and are typically unable to adjust either side. Federations are most notable in this ability as powers are equally delegated between a central authority and its political units to provide an equal and fair footing on national matters. [i.e. United States]Federations are usually referred to as a Federal system.

The two lesser known political structures are that of Confederacies and Federacies - both of these systems practise Asymetric Federalism and are essentially a combination of either a Federation and Confederation - or a Federation and Unitary state respectively. Federacies are characterized by having a central authority but reserving some political unit power while at the same time freely delegating powers as needed. As a result, some political units may have more administrative powers than others. [i.e. Spain's relationship with Catalonia versus the rest of the country] The same applies to a Confederacy but opposite. Empires and Hegemons can be any one of these essentially. Confederacies and Federacies are usually referred to as Confederate or Federate systems respectively.
