Trams in Kassar first appeared in the 19th century amidst widespread Soravian investment into the area. Opening in 1874, it was one of the first tram networks in Coius and is currently the oldest continuously-operating tram network on the continent.
The system first utilised horse-drawn carriages, before introducing steam trams in 1890 and later full electrification beginning in 1909. By 1921 the full network had been electrified and the last steam trams were removed from service. At its height in the 1920s the network had four lines, serving most of the cities as well as the nearby settlement of Dzhinar. Before the introduction of motorcars, Kassar's tram network was by far the predominant mode of transport in the city.
Following negotiations for the repatriation of Kassar in the 1960s, the governments of the UPSR and the Satrian Republic agreed on several multi-year leases for Soravia to retain its presence in Kassar after the city had been ceded. Part of the agreed leases was that the privately-owned Kastram would continue to operate the network for 15 years. Kastram ceased operation of the network in 1977 and its responsibility was handed over to the newly-created Lohadandapatha Sagaradar. Internal problems in the SR led to negligence and severe degradation of the network, and its locale was severely restricted in the 1980s.
