Sydalon uses the system of absolute primogeniture in accordance with house law first established in 1631. Succession dictates that to be eligible, a dynast must practice Fabrian Catholicism. Dynasts who marry without the express consent of the reigning Monarch are excluded from succession, as are any of their descendants. Once succeeding to the throne, a Monarch is anointed 30 days later and takes an oath before peers, government ministers, members of the clergy, and the citizenry at-large.

The Guilhemite claim was strongly contested during the 1972 Marriage Crisis, which saw Guilhemite claimant John marry Princess Alara of Ghant and his claim to the throne reasserted by members of the Ghantish Imperial Family, including Alara's father Prince Alexander of Ghant. John relinquished his claim in 1977.
