The CFS Pelegiad is the only Lowencraic-class supercarrier in service with the the Confederate Brytisc Fleet. The Lowencraic-class carrier is the largest vessel currently operated by the Fleet, and serves as the flagship under the command of Lord Admiral Antonio Botas.
The Pelegiad uses nuclear power for propulsion, making it capable of operating for upwards of 20 years without refuelling. It is expected to last for at least 55 years before needing a major refit.
History
The Pelegiad was commissioned on 16th May 2007 and constructed by Hlaford Shipyards at Whitebay. It was completed in February 2013, followed by a launching ceremony on 28th March, and was named after the legendary hero Pelegiad, replacing the aging CFS Shieldboss which was subsequently decommissioned.
The Pelegiad first saw action in May 2015 when it was deployed to the Pepper Atoll region as the core of the Brytisc Reaction Force. The vessel carried the Nortymba Regiment and staged airstrikes against the Manaagnwe Militia there. The deployment was declared a success two weeks later, with the capital of St Joseph secured and Pepper Atoll absorbed into the Brytene.
Design
The flight deck of the carrier has a CATOBAR arrangement, despite the included ski-jump launch, a failsafe to allow launch of certain aircraft in the event of mechanical failure. The CATOBAR system uses steam catapults for aircraft launch and arrestor wires for recovery. The carrier usually carries roughly 75 aircraft.
There are no current plans for further ships in the series.
Defenses and systems
The Pelegiad is well-equipped with medium- and short-range SAM systems, as well as a quartet of automatic CIWS gun turrets. It also has three autocannons and six chainguns for defense against boarders and other smaller targets.
Its electronic warfare suites, sensory systems, and digital networking are reported to be cutting edge, although detailed information is not made available by the Admirality.
