The Pensioners' Party (Ghaillish: Páirtí Pinsinéirí; PP) is a political party in Caldia. It was founded in February 1986 and has representation in local, county, and national government.
History
The Pensioners' Party was formally registered with the electoral commission on 12 February 1986. It was founded to work for the interests of pensioners. After years of liberal economic policy, there were growing concerns among pensioners that government pensions would be cut. The party organized at a local level to combat this, standing in all municipal and county elections since 1989. It began to contest elections to health boards in 1993 where, the party has maintained a notable presence.
The party supported the establishment of the State Pension Fund in 1993 and advocate for its protection. Support for the party grew following the 2005 Global Financial Crisis. In 2017, the party elected its first representative to the Comhthionól Náisiúnta, Ellie Níc Raghnaill. She won re-election in the 2019 election.
The party's main support comes from the suburbs and is concentrated on County Holyhead.
Ideology
The party describes itself as single-issue in support of pensioners' interests. It mostly concerns itself with healthcare, social care, taxation, and pensions. Generally, the party supports increase state spending on healthcare and other social programs. It is opposed to any misuse of the State Pension Fund, Caldia's largest sovereign wealth fund, and has proposed a constitutional amendment preventing it from being used for any purpose other than state pensions.
It has been described by some commentators as populist for its tactics and grassroots organization.
