Trawlers' Interest (Caithian: Diddordeb Dreillong, Ghaillish: Ús Trawlaí) is a branch of the Centre Party that operates in County Caithia. The party currently has 1 of the Caithian seats in the Comhthionól Náisiúnta and 5 elected members of the Cynulliad. It also has representation in all of Caithia's 16 parishes. The party is part of the governing coalition led by First Minister Aoife Nic Dhiarmaid.
History
The party was established in 1984 as a merger of the local association of the Centre Party and the Caithian People's Party. Both parties failed to enter the Cynulliad in the 1980 election. They entered talks to merge over their similar policy positions and shared electoral base. The new party was known as the Trawlers' Party, a name it kept until the 2010 election when it rebranded as Trawlers' Interest.
Since first entering the Cynulliad in 1985, the party has acted as Caithia's third party. For much of its history, it has been the largest of the unionist parties in the assembly. It has participated in a number of governments, working with both Forward and other unionist parties.
Platform and support
The party maintains an official platform that promotes centrism as its official ideology. The party also takes agrarian, regionalist and unionist positions. It is a strong supporter of the Caithian fishing industry and its practices. The party supports Caithia's status as an autonomous county and called for Caithia to retain its devolved powers as a province of Caldia.
Much of the party's support comes from fishing workers and unionists. Historically, it has been the largest unionist party in Caithia. The party is also supported by some liberal and conservative voters who are attracted to the party's agrarian policies.
