The Mesazon of Perateia (Perateian: Μεσάζων τοῦ Παομανια; Mesάzwn toῦ Paomania) is the imperial viceroy and de facto head of government of Perateia. The Mesazon is appointed by the Perateian emperor, and serves a term of years provided at the time of appointment, most commonly 4 to 5 years for a single term. The mesazon concurrently serves as Count of the East in Latium.
The mesazon serves as the emperor's chief minster, and coordinates and overseas the other ministers of the imperial government. The role of mesazon was expanded in 1964, when the personal union between Perateia and Latium began, as it previously fell into sporadic disuse and limited household administrative roles. It is considered similar in scope of duties and obligations to that of the Latin Master of Offices, however, the Mesazon is also charged with additional quasi-head of state functions to undertake in the emperor's absence.
Selection and appointment
While the emperor spends considerable time in Perateia throughout the year, as a result of the emperor's seat being located in Castellum, the mesazon is often appointed from with in the mIperial family or the emperor's extended family.

Role
The mesazon is an appointed viceroy serving as the de facto head of government of Perateia and quasi-head of state. He is charged with undertaking the primary executive duties of government in the emperor's absence. These functions include enacting legislation passed by the senate, or in some instances issue edicts or imperial orders. Through these edicts, the mesazon can declare public emergencies within Perateia, temporarily suspend or alter local law, ordinances, etc. Edicts issues by the mesazon must be countersigned by the emperor.
A unique power held by the meszaon is to grant clemency or issues pardons to individuals; however, this is a rare self-action by the mesazon and traditionally still come from the emperor himself. While this clemency power exists, any act of clemency granted by the mesazon must be countersigned by the emperor. The mesazon is also afforded a role on the Board of Trade, which oversees toll schedules on passage through the Perseid Straits.
The mesazon also holds veto authority over legislation passed by the Perateian Senate. There is no mechanism for the local senate to overturn a veto other than direct Imperial Petition. The mesazon is also responsible for submitting a budget to the Treasury Board and the Senate. In addition, the count has the power of appointment to appoint local prefects and other local officials. More recently, the mesazon has convened a Perateian equivalent to the imperial Local Council. This action has seen mixed support, as the senate asserts that it is a move to circumvent any legislative process. However, it has seen widespread support from communities and local officials.
In addition, the mesazon holds a key role in the Perateian Armed Forces and auxiliary forces. Most often, this role results in the mesazon having a military background.
Foreign policy role
In addition to its active governing duties, the mesazon plays a role in many ceremonial functions, including X, Y, and Z. He appoints and recalls ambassadors, as well as receiving foreign ambassadors on the emperor's behalf. The mesazon may also represented Perateia abroad; however, the emperor's permission is required for the mesazon to leave Perateia. While not the commander in chief of the armed forces, the mesazon is the functional day-to-day leader of the armed forces, and holds the title of [TBD].
Amenities and privileges
As viceroy, the mesazon is granted many amenities that are traditionally reserved for the emperor. Chief among these is use of Heraion as a residence, which is the primary residence and position of court for the emperor. Eudoikoi, located approximately 2 miles from Heraion, serves as the emperor's official guest house and secondary residence for the mesazon if needed, most often in the event the emperor or a member of the imperial family visits Leonople. Botaneiation is the official county residence of the emperor, located in the Kybellion theme, made available for the mesazon during their tenure in office
It is widely known that the mesazon is provided an allowance of at least $50,000 per year to cover expenses incurred while in office. However, the most recent release of annual compensation for the mesazon is less widely known, and as of 1983, the annual compensation was reportedly $75,000.
