The Giddens Court was the period in the history of the Supreme Court of Makko Oko from 2019 to 2023, when Kimberly Giddens served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Makko Oko. Giddens was the first Chief Justice of the court after the regime change from a republic over to an empire following the end of the Civil Transition War. The Giddens Court is considered by historians to be the most unified court in Makkonian history, including previous courts from the Republic. Giddens served as Chief Justice until her kidnapping and later reported death, when Edgar Gerlach was appointed to succeed her, starting the Gerlach Court.
Compared to the previous Campbell Court, the Giddens Court was seen as pro-rights and anti-government, barring some exceptions. One such exception was Agwmar Fabbri v. Makko Oko where an unanimous ruling restricted the constitutional right to citizenship to those children borne by non-enslaved parents. This ruling made the Giddens Court unpopular among parents, however, compared to the Campbell Court, it was still much more popular. The Giddens Court, much like the following Gerlach Court, was made up of mostly conservatives, with liberals being equal to the conservatives from 2019 to 2021 at 3-3. While the composition of the court was mostly conservative, Giddens stole the show as a liberal thanks to her natural talent of bringing people together and being able to create agreements among the justices, something that the court is lauded for today.
Membership
Membership on the court was fluctuating until 2021 when one additional justice was added and it stayed consistent until the end of the period. At the end of the Civil Transition War, the new head of state Emperor Conall Solis sought to reform the government, including the judiciary, so the Supreme Court was effectively changed completely including in how it operated and what rules etc. existed for prosecutions and other cases. The Campbell Court was effectively dissolved at the end of the war, with most of the justices that composed it not being brought over to the new court, except for Giddens. Giddens was the only justice from the Campbell Court brought over to the new court to serve as the Chief Justice, having originally been an Associate Justice.
