Daedo Capital International Airport (IATA: DCX, ICAO: DCIA), formerly referred to as the Shin Daedo International Airport (Zhenian: 신대도국제공항) or Daedo Seongjo International Airport (Zhenian: 대도성조국제공항), is the primary international airport of Daedo. Located in the southwestern edge of the Seoan-gu District of Daedo, it is situated about 45 kilometers away from the city's Financial District. Named after Emperor Seongjo, the first Emperor of the Empire of Zhenia, it is the largest airport in Zhenia, as well as one of the busiest airports in the world.

Currently serving the metropolitan area around the nation's capital as well as parts of Chungmu Province, Daedo Capital International Airport was built to replace the overcrowded Jinpo International Airport in northwestern Daedo. Since its opening in May 1, 1997, the two airports are set to operate in tandem as international hubs, although most commercial flights have relocated to the new airport upon its opening: the pre-existing Jinpo Airport has since then shifted its priority to hosting non-flag carriers and domestic flights. As the city's primary international hub, the airport has initiated a three-phase expansion plan to increase its capacity: Terminal 2, the most recent addition to the airport, has opened in April 1, 2018.

Today, Daedo Capital International Airport is the single largest and busiest airport in the nation, serving over 117 million passengers and processing over 1 million tonnes of cargo in 2019 alone. It ranks first among the nation's airports for international traffic, with over 46 million international passengers, including transfer passengers, using the airport in 2019. Its significance has also made it the hub and focus city for more airlines than any other airport in the nation, including it being the only primary hub for both Zhenian Airways and Air Zhenia. Along with Shin Jinhae International Airport, it is one of the two airports in the nation that offers direct flights to all six continents of the world.

History

With Jinpo International Airport, located on the northwestern coastal region of Daedo Special City, reaching its designed capacity limits by 1990 as Zhenian air transport skyrocketed, proposals to build a second airport for Daedo surfaced as early as 1980, shortly after the December Revolution. The Daedo Metropolitan Government, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Territories and Transportation, explored various alternative airport options, including sites as far as 80 km north of the city center in Chungmu Province and a site that was a part of the Gulf of Danguk at the time. Of the locations at hand, while the proposal using reclaimed land from the Gulf of Danguk to the southwest of the city was not viewed overall positively in terms of environmental impact, it was evaluated positively for evading noise pollution concerns and capability to operate 24/7, both of which were serious concerns for the exiting Jinpo International Airport. The location was decided by 1985, after which reclamation of land between the mainland and Seosong Island took place.
