Lève-toi, ô Baïen! (Arise, O Bahian!) was the national anthem of the United Bahian Republic from 1955 until its dissolution in 1965.

History

The song was written by Médard Lavaud, a resident of Sainte-Germaine in 1944 as a song for the pro-independence protests in the city, as Lavaud believed that East Riziland should be granted independence as a separate country from Riziland. The song caught on among the protesters in Sainte-Germaine, which due to its status as one of the largest cities in Bahia at the time made the song prominent among Bahians.

The ambiguous nature of Lavaud's lyrics made the song popular among the Pan-Bahian movement, although Lavaud consistently criticised the interpretation, saying that "this song was not meant to represent all of Bahia, but rather just my homeland," and that "had they listened to the song, they would've known that I was only speaking about Garambura."

Despite Lavaud's opposition, when the United Bahian Republic was established in 1954, when they needed an anthem to represent the United Bahian Republic as an organisation, Lève-toi, ô Baïen! was seen as the obvious choice, as the organisers of the United Bahian Republic believed that the song was pan-Bahian in message, as opposed to just being regionalist, like the anthems that were in use by the member states of the United Bahian Republic.

Thus, on the first anniversary of the establishment of the United Bahian Republic, Lève-toi, ô Baïen! was officially adopted as the national anthem of the United Bahian Republic. Over the next fourteen years, it would be used to represent the United Bahian Republic as a whole, as opposed to their individual members.

Due to its status as a pan-Bahian song, it was also used by other pan-Bahian organisations, such as the (TBC), while the melody of Lève-toi, ô Baïen! was used by the Mabifian Democratic Republic as their anthem, Main dans la main, although they had different lyrics.

Lyrics

Gaullican Weranian Estmerish
Chorus

Lève-toi, ô Baïen!
Le sol est maintenant à toi
Ce ne sera plus
La propriété des nordistes!

Steh auf, oh Bahianer!
Der Boden gehört jetzt dir
Es soll nicht mehr sein
Das Eigentum der Nordländer!

Arise, O Bahian!
The soil is now yours
No longer shall it be
The property of the northerners!

First Stanza

Do not forget our accomplishments that we have made
The northerner may try and destroy who we are
But today, we will no longer lie down and accept
The fundamental injustice of northern rule over us Bahians!
Light the torch of freedom and advance forward!

Chorus

Lève-toi, ô Baïen!
Le sol est maintenant à toi
Ce ne sera plus
La propriété des nordistes!

Steh auf, oh Bahianer!
Der Boden gehört jetzt dir
Es soll nicht mehr sein
Das Eigentum der Nordländer!

Arise, O Bahian!
The soil is now yours
No longer shall it be
The property of the northerners!

Second Stanza

Never again shall we be used as a plaything by the north
Never shall they try and undermine our God-given rights!
Never shall we accept an artificial state!
We insist on a natural nation, where we run ourselves
For the benefit of our native homeland!

Chorus

Lève-toi, ô Baïen!
Le sol est maintenant à toi
Ce ne sera plus
La propriété des nordistes!

Steh auf, oh Bahianer!
Der Boden gehört jetzt dir
Es soll nicht mehr sein
Das Eigentum der Nordländer!

Arise, O Bahian!
The soil is now yours
No longer shall it be
The property of the northerners!

Third Stanza

May our country triumph over any adversity God throws at us
May our industries bring benefit to the whole world!
Never shall we bring discord to this land
And may the prosperity of mankind be the objective of this land
May our nation succeed in this world!
