Erebus, officially the Erebus Special Administrative District, is the eighth-most populous city and the capital city of the Antarctic Circle States. Located on A.C.S.'s Eastern Coast, Erebus is the Southern-most capital city in the world, only a few thousand kilometers away from the geographic South Pole. Residents of the city are known as "Erebusians". As of June 2022, Erebus's estimated metropolitan population was 361,000, meaning the city is home to approximately 3.26% of the nation's population. The city is often referred to by its nickname, the 'Ice Capital'.
Despite having one of the most extreme weather conditions in the world, Erebus is ranked high on global city development index and the most livable cities. It is classified as a beta global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, indicating its influence in the region and throughout the world. Ranked xx in the world for economic opportunity, Erebus has an advanced market economy with strengths in finance, scientific research and tourism. Established in 1908, the Royal Erebus Institute of Technology was A.C.S.'s first university and is regarded as one of the world's leading research institutes.
