Etymology

The nation of Seqoyah was named after the Hakon indigenous word for the characteristic Giant Redwood Trees which extensively forested the inland areas. A key national symbol the Seqoyah features on the national flag, seal and government logo.

History

Prior to Parthenian discovery and colonisation the area was inhabited by numerous tribal groups which broadly fell into four large ethno-linguastic nations; the Hakon, Chamason, Yaaku, and Penetah.

Colonisation

Following the discovery of Borealis the coastal areas of Seqoyah experienced a steady stream or independent colonists, especially from Angland following the Anglish Civil War. Other colonists included those from Vermand and Brynmor.

The value of the territory now consisting Seqoyah was not considered high. Unimproved land was not productive, the giant Seqoyah tree's were a key source of income, but the nation's mineral wealth had not yet been fully discovered of exploited and as a result did was not officially encompassed into the Battanian Empire, instead maintaining a tacit subservience and loyalty to the emerging 'hyperpower'.

Several independent states were decreed by colonists, which started to form eight states and form a lose union. These included Mynyth (an alternative spelling of the Brynish word for mountain) and the eastern peninsular state of Kalifona.

The Gold Rush of the 1840s led to dramatic change in the nation's demographics and fortunes. The rush brought around 300,000 people from across Eleziar, not just Parthenia. As well as an influx of labour, the rush injected huge amounts of capital into the country which. This was notably spent on railroads which opened up the inland areas and the wholesale improvement of agricultural land and the planting of orchards, vineyards, and cereal fields.

As settlers continued to push inland, they displaced indigenous groups pushing them to the margins. This resulted in a number of small wars and skirmishes. The period is known as the Native Wars.

Federalization

By the 1860's far from being an economic backwater, the now eight states of Seqoyah were valuable and wealthy territories with growing industrious populations. The wealthiest state New Kornkia has began to build institutions including banks, an effective court system and several universities as well a defence forces who had gained experience in the Native Wars.

A risk of invasion and integration into the Battanian Empire was considered the main concern by the late 1880s. Merchants, bankers and industrialists from New Kornkia began to propose nation-hood and unity of the eight states under a single Federal nation.

The 'Seqoyah' was chosen as the national symbol in the first conference of St Francis when New Kornkia, Mynythh and Kalifona unified into a Federation on April the 7th 1870.

Geography

Seqoyah is one of the largest countries on Borealis, the border is formed of the high mountains to the north and the Merillian Ocean to the south.

The central Mynyth mountains sit separately from the main range and are featured on the national seal.

The Koppen Climate classification is dominated by CSa/Csb/Csa hot/warm and cold summer Mediterranean climate along the southern coast and for hundreds of kilometres inland. Further north inland climates include BSh (Hot Semi Arid), and on higher ground, Dsb (warm-summer med continental). The far north and east of Kalifona has small pockets of Cfb, Oceanic.

After improvements, this land has become some of the most productive on the planet, with huge quanities of wine, fruits and vegetables grown across the nation.

Biodiversity

The etymological Seqoyah tree still dominates inland forests, although has suffered from massive de-forestation since colonisation. These colossal coniferous trees have a distinctive red wood can live several thousand years, reach trunk diameters of 6-8m and a height of 90m tall. Almost 60% of the pre-colonisation Seqoyah's have been cleared with around 190,000 remaining. They are protected from logging, but at risk from fire and fire supression.

Other forests include a wide variety of coniferous trees and a number of deciduous trees such as Scrub and Englemann Oaks.

Diverse wildlife includes notable mammal life such as Raccoons, Skunks, Coyotes, Beavers and most famously the Black Bear which features on the national seal.

marine life includes sea lions, Dolphins, and Humpback whales, with rich rivers supporting Salmon, Trout and numerous other freshwater fish.

Politics and Government

The eight constituent States have large amounts of power and responsibility including healthcare, education, pensions and housing.

A Federal Parliament is elected every 6 years and is based on first-past-the-post on 430 approximately equal population constituencies (~500k each). The largest party/grouping forming the government led by the Prime Minister who is head of government.

The upper house; the Federal Senate is elected on an opposing 6 year cycle elected on a proportional representation system, with 215 seats. This upper house is charged with review of legislation, although it can propose its own.

The president is appointed by Parliament with approval of the Senate and a majority of states. They are largely ceremonial, without a term limit, but can be recalled. Convention states that the president is usually a person over the age of 60, with some public service, of good character, and largely non-partisan. They traditionally step down after 10 years of service.

Military

A modern military is deemed to be necessary to defend the interests of the nation at home and overseas. It is not oversized given the general policy of 'soft neutrality'.

Administrative Divisions

The eight states are:

  • New Kornkia
  • Mynyth
  • Kaliforna
  • Tulonomni
  • Whitepeaks
  • Redwood
  • Napa
  • Sanomoa.

Law

An independent judiciary is overseen by a Federal High Court, appointed from within the judiciary.

Economy

Strong mixed, largely free-market economy with a fair foundation of extraction and agricultural industries. A large manufacturing base includes, medicaments, construction machinery, road and rail vehicles, and aerospace. Key weakness is a reliance on imports of oil, gas. Other imports include consumer goods, electronics, and clothing. The service economy represents about 70% of GDP and includes a very large software and consultancy service sector.

Primary sector

The primary sector is dominated by modern commercial agriculture including a huge wine and fruit growing

Secondary sector

Food production and processing are major

Tertiary sector

Quarternary sector
