The Secretariat Of State Religion Control, also referred to as the SSRC, is the government religious enforcement and protection agency in the Empire of Makko Oko under the directive and control of the Ministry of Internal Security. Its mission is to ensure the safety and security of the nation's state religion of Christianity, including by protecting important religious members, investigating cases of anti-religious sentiment and speech, etc.

The SSRC within its history has kidnapped openly anti-religious or anti-Christian people, arrested dissenters and has been accused of several high-profile assassinations domestically.

History

Before the Empire

Makko Oko had been largely secular for a majority of its history, from even before formation of the Republic. When the Republic came to be, secularity was embraced, but hadn't been strictly enforced until the presidency of Gary Taormina from 2000-2007, where the government sought to enact laws restricting the promotion of religions in many different areas. The enforcement was relaxed upon the presidency of Harold Zenonis and publicly religious people began to peak, moreso than any other period in the Republic's history.

Before Christianity

During the reign of the Empire, secularity had originally been the norm. Religious institutions of all kinds, including schools, had been prohibited. In addition, all religions had been prohibited, and any practice of such had also been prohibited. These rules were constantly protested but the rules never changed until November of 2021 when a single religion got permitted through the Universal Religions Charter that was enacted, Christianity.

Formation Of SSRC

On January 2nd, 2022, Emperor Conall Solis announced the establishment of the SSRC, to better enforce the secularity rules that the government had put in place. The purpose of the agency changed on February 18th, 2022 when theocracy was instated with the establishmnt of Christianity as the state religion, therefore establishing the agency as a religious citizen monitor checking for non-religious persons.

Duties & Functions

Like most departments and agencies within the government, no law or order formally established the SSRC, and instead, all duties and functions are granted unilaterally after the formation of the agency in question, mostly by the Emperor themselves, but in some cases, the heads of the cabinet-level ministries give the orders.

The SSRC is the dedicated law enforcement agency that protects the state's integrity on religion, and is one of the only dedicated enforcers of Section 10 of the Basic Rights. In addition to protection of the religion, they're also one of the sole prosecutors on religious-based or related crimes, sending all indicted citizens to the religious courts. The SSRC advances the religion internationally with government-sanctioned operations, including manipulation campaigns and assassinations.
