The Blackhelm Confederate Army represents the land forces of the Armed Forces of the Blackhelm Confederacy, formed from parts of the collapsing Imperial Exponential Army in 1997. The formation of these forces posed economic challenges after the collapse of the Empire, and required reforms to professionalize the force during the transition.
Since 1997, the army has withdrawn many thousands of troops from former Imperial garrisons abroad, while remaining extensively committed to the Backlands War, peacekeeping, and other operations in the Imperial successor states. The army is currently involved in the Yellosian War, and recently took part in the Battle of Port Blacksand.
The Blackhelm Confederate Army encapsulates the Confederate Ground Forces, Airborne Troops and Venatores loyal to the Senate. The Marines, also loyal to the Senate, the Airborne Guard Imperial Guard, and Honor Guard loyal to the chancellor, and Town Guard units with localized loyalties across the nation, as well as well as private, tribal, and other local units are not incorporated into this, and instead fall under other categories.
Mission
Blackhelm Confederate soldiers equipped with
AR-3 assault rifles on maneuvers in the bush.
The primary responsibilities of the Blackhelm Confederate Army are the protection of the state borders, combat on land, the security of occupied territories, and the defeat of enemy troops. The Army must be able to achieve these goals both in nuclear war and non-nuclear war, especially without the use of weapons of mass destruction. Furthermore, they must be capable of protecting the national interests of the ISBC within the framework of its international obligations.
The Main Command of the Army is officially tasked with the following objectives:
- The training of troops for combat, on the basis of tasks determined by the Armed Forces' General Staff.
- The improvement of troops' structure and composition, and the optimization of their numbers, including for special troops.
- The development of military theory and practice.
- The development and introduction of training field manuals, tactics, and methodology.
- The improvement of operational and combat training of the Army.
History
The Blackhelm Confederate Army draws largely upon many of the traditions of the Imperial Exponential Army, with a heavy focus on counterinsurgency warfare and the use of artillery to eliminate enemy formations and achieve its goals.
Post-Imperial Reforms
While the Imperial Exponential Army had adopted a primarily defensive-minded posture in the last few decades of its existence, the new Blackhelm Confederacy sought to establish a more mobile, offensive-minded force almost immediately after it was established. The Army retained the use of static divisions, it also created mechanized assault divisions designed specifically to serve as a mid-way point between Infantry and armored Divisions, and serve as the central point for offensive maneuver.

Reforms under Eaglebrand
Since the rise of Octavius Eaglebrand to the position of Chancellor following the Blackhelm Confederate Revolution in 2011, a new expeditionary focus has come into the doctrine of the Army. This has led to the re-creation of the standard Blackhelm Confederate Infantry Division to follow the Brigade Combat Team organization, effectively turning each division into their own, self-contained and self-supportive military force, capable of operating organically in overseas environments without additional units to support them.
