Perlsienne, officially the Dominion of Perlsienne (Gagian: le Dominion du Perlsienne; Niagaran: TBD), is an island nation located in the Tenific Ocean that covers an area of 38,323 square kilometres (14,797 sq mi) and consists of 7 main islands and 119 minor islands. The closest nations to Perlsienne are Saint Sienia and Gagium on the Stratea landmass. Perlsienne's largest city is Setermoen, which has a population of over 227 thousand and is the nation's foremost economic and social hub. The capital and political center of the nation is Clamoise, a holdover from Gagian administration of the islands. Other notable cities include Naestved and Trislon.

Due to its remote location in the middle of the Tenific Ocean, Perlsienne was not inhabitated by humans until the 12th century, when Gautier the Forlorn discovered the islands. After returning to Gagium, several groups, including followers of Gagian paganism, organized expeditions to settle the islands. The island chain, lying at the distant corner of the Gagian sphere of influence, was neglected even after the Commonwealth of Lointerre was formed in 1354. The island became an important commerce hub in the Tenific Ocean following the discovery and subsequent colonization of the Furbish Islands by numerous powers. Even as late as the 18th century, coastal cities such as Trislon and Clamoise (the capital of Lointerre) were regarded as the only places where the rule of law was reliably enforced, while the mountainous interior of the island chain was sparsely populated and known to be a popular hideout for Gagian exiles and criminals.

By the onset of the 19th century, Gagian Lointerre had an estimated population of 400,000 people. Following the TBDWAR involving Gagium and Greater Niagara, considered to be a wider part of the Vaugric Wars, the islands were annexed by the latter power.

Etymology

History

Early Gagian Colonization

Due to its remote location and distance from Stratea, Perlsienne remained uninhabited as nation states such as the Mavonan Empire rose and fell. There is no evidence of Mavonan settlement on Perlsienne despite language outlining the territory of Lower Mavona found in TBDAUTHOR'S TBDTEXT circa 421. The first known discovery of Perlsienne came from Gautier the Forlorn, who is the subject of much speculation among Gagian historians. It is believed that Gautier hailed from the Gagian village of Paris, and was a peasant for most of his life. According to the medieval Gagian historian TBD, Gautier claimed to have received visions from several Gagian mythological figures, including Merblu, the ancient god of the seas. These visions directed him to sail east from Chatrois, where he would discover the ancestral home of the gods and unlimited wealth. Following these visions, Gautier is said to have recruited several peasants to trek to Chatrois, where they held a ship captain hostage until he agreed to their proposed venture to sail direct east from Chatrois.

The details of Gautier's venture are still relatively unknown, though it is believed that he deviated several hundred miles to the south, as he wouldn't have discovered Perlsienne otherwise. In 1127, Gautier returned to Gagium with about a third of the crew he left with, claiming to have discovered the realm of the Gagian gods. This immediately made him a target of the Benevian Church, and the Bishop of Chatrois ordered his execution in 1128.
