The Democratic Republic of Layfet, most commonly known as Layfet, with other common distinctions being the Layfetian Republic, or the Goldwynian Archipelago, is a country composed of seven states (Epinay, New Goldwynia, New Rhode, Higham, Albin, Mirvain, Cataland), eight islands (Epinay, New Goldwyn, Parcel, New Rhode, Higham, Leone, Mirvain, Cata), two joint sovereign territories, and two major self-governing territories, at 10,931 square miles (28,311 km2), Layfet is one of the world's smallest countries by total area. With a population of over 4.3 million people,Layfet is also one the least populous countries. The capital is Nordipolica, and the largest city by population is Tonnes. Eight islands make up what is known as Ventismarian Layfet while the Montay Atoll and Hallis Atoll make up what is known as the outermost regions of Layfet. Anthros Atoll and the Willow Rose Launch Center constitute Layfet's joint-sovereign territories, with the former two being shared with Makenzie and Athabaska and the latter with The Nina Islands Despite being an group of islands, Layfet is considered part of the continent of Ventismar and is bordered by Capsland to the east. All Layfet's territories are scattered across the Divergian ocean and stretching across several official time zones. The extremely small area, simple temperate climate, and lack of diverse wildlife make Layfet one of the world's lease diverse countries.
Paleo-Ventismarians migrated from modern-day Capsland and Lindenholt to the Goldwynian archipelago at least 60,000 years ago, forming the ancient Avadian civilization that died out shortly after the Garddrin Invasions in the early 500s. Before the arrival of Goldwynian and Capslandian colonists between the 10th to 18th centuries, there was an attempted North Rukoniaian colony in the 9th century that failed. Layfet emerged from the Cappo-Linden Union, after numerous disputes between the area and the motherland which led to the Layfetian War for Independence, which began in 1717. The war ended in 1723 with Layfet becoming the first country to gain independence in the 18th century. The current constitution was adopted in 1964, with the first version being ratified in 1723. The constitution guarantees many fundamental rights and civil liberties, in addition to setting up Layfet's government. After the war, Layfet remained highly isolationist and focusing on internal structure and development until a wave of progressivism hit that nation during the later half the 19th century. It was during this time, Layfet saw rapid economic and industrial growth as well as a major shift towards socialism and annexing several islands.
During the first half of the 20th century, Layfet's continued to grow as it was spared the horrors of both world wars except for a massive refugee crisis, but still lacked behind the rest of the world economically and technologically. After growing fears and resentments towards Layfet's socialism reached a boiling point, Layfet erupted into a civil war that lasted from 1948 to 1964. Afterwards, Layfet quickly reconstructed and entered a new period of technological and economic growth which allowed it to finally catch up with the rest of the world and then become a strong player on the international stage despite its status when compared to world powers. After a small war in the 1980s and help from the international community, Layfet was able to become a space faring nation and a strong diplomatic power, which it continues to be to this day, establishing many ties and constructing alliances and deals with many nations across the globe.
Layfet is the world's oldest surviving federations. Layfet is a founding member of the The United Sunalayan Assembly, The United Intelligence Network, and other world organizations, it is also part of the Vensimarian Union, which it joined in 2019. Layfet also founded the International Sunalaya Football Association and the International Effort for De-Militarization Initiative. Layfet is a highly developed country, having stable economy powered mostly by massive self-sufficiency or by being able to access the world's goods and services at virtually no cost due mainly to economic aid. The economy is largely post-industrial, characterized by the dominance of services and knowledge-based activities, although the manufacturing sector remains present. Layfet is the world's largest importer by percentage in comparison to total share of its goods, with nearly 70 percent of its goods being imported from other nations. Layfet is one of the world's smallest exporters, with is largest export being vehicles, software, and computer hardware. Layfet has one of the smallest shares of the world's economy.
Layfet continues to rank very high in measures of socioeconomic performance, including average wage, human development, per capita GDP, and worker productivity. Layfet is reknowned for not having a military though Sunrisia provides for the nation's defense. Layfet is a leading political, cultural, and scientific force internationally.
