Aretias is an absolute monarchy ruled by the [[House of Byzennos]]. The Byzennos have been ruling Aretias since the 17th century, originally as Lords of Aretias, historically as a vassal or tributary to other rulers, including the [[Monarchy of Vardana|Monarch of Vardana]]. The current [[Monarchy of Aretias|Basileus]] is [[Basil II of Aretias|Basil II]], who succeed his father on 2 June 2016. The Basileus has the sole power to appoint and remove ministers of the Crown, who together form the [[Royal Council (Aretias)|Royal Council]]. Aretias has no codified constitution, which places most legislative, executive, and judicial authority in the hands of the Basileus.
