Arnyü's Finger
Arnyü's Finger (Trellinese: Pega Arnyüqa) is a peninsula in southern Trellin and the most northerly area of mainland Rezat. With an area of 822 square kilometres (317 sq mi), it is the third largest peninsula in southern Trellin, behind the Jajexan Peninsula, in Jajich and Bal Emrith, and the Cape of Khem in western Azmir. It is separated from the island of Morikz by a strait that is 7.1 kilometres (3.8 nmi) across at its narrowest point.
The peninsula derives its name from the Ethlorek goddess Arnyü, an earth and fertility deity. In early Trellinese history, the land between the Etsakha and the Rëosana was considered sacred to Arnyü. The peninsula, the northernmost extremity of which resembles a fingertip in shape, was rendered more slender on early maps, and so it was given the name Arnyü's Finger.
The landscape of Arnyü's Finger is rough and hilly, with vast tracts of dense rainforest from the interior right up to the coast. Settlement on the peninsula, which is heavier on the western side than the eastern, is mostly confined to a narrow belt within 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) of the sea. The largest city on the peninsula is Tanvuna, an important harbour that exports bauxite mined in northeast Rezat. The area's main economic activities are resource extraction. Mining and forestry and their adjacent industries employ the largest share of the population. The peninsula suffers from underdevelopment of infrastructure, and there is a significant income gap between the top and lowest earners. Many of the highest-paid people are not local: the average earner in the top ten percent lives in Rezat for less than four years. Most specialists and senior workers come from outside the province. Conversely, many young people leave the area to seek employment in the nation's major cities. Population retention is deemed the provincial government's main priority, ahead of environmentalist concerns, despite criticism of "rampant" deforestation by the Sidereal Crown.
