Benedict Kitagawa (21 April 1989 - 12 January 2054) was a Lucian officer who served in the Special Air Service as a Lieutenant. Benedict is the eldest of the Kitagawa cousins, and the first of Daidoji Kitagawa's grandchildren. He is the only son of Kiriya's elder sister, who was a single mother.
Known as the child that Nihhonese parents prayed for, Benedict was seen as a frail man, often being given unimportant businesses and orders to run. However, Benedict is a charismatic man, being able to easily convince people. Kiriya admired and loved Benedict as his godson and nephew, often wishing that his children were as confident as he was. Benedict admired Kiriya and often wished he would gain the same treatment in the army. However, Benedict's gullible and easy-going personality often left him being bullied. His godfather, Harold Shepherd Roth saw potential in Benedict and often took him under his wing, despite Kiriya's protests.
By the time when the Deseleni War happened, Benedict would unwittingly play a part in Roth's plot to assassinate his uncle as part of Case Silver, with Roth using Benedict's personality to his own advantage. His subordinate, Johnny Lupo befriended Benedict, helped him with his goal, and gained important information to help Abdul Rashid in assassinating Kiriya. Benedict would not see through this given his own personality and pride.
When Kiriya knew that Roth was plotting against him, Benedict's cousin, Naoto Kitagawa rebuilt their close relationship that they had in their childhood, as a ploy to find out who was ratting Kiriya out to Roth and Rashid. When Naoto asked if he knew Lupo, he denied, and Naoto played along. In the celebrations of the 2049 New Year's Eve, Benedict would inadvertently reveal to Naoto (who overheard him) that he was the rat (by mentioning that he and Lupo were in Gallia, visiting strip clubs), horribly shocking Naoto and contradicting his statement he made about him and Lupo knowing each other.
When Naoto revealed it to his father, Kiriya was devastated with the fact that his own favourite nephew and his grandfather's favourite great-grandson would betray him and his entire family. He assured Naoto that he would not want anything to happen to Benedict while Roth was alive, and the war had not ended. Following the conclusion of Case Silver, that ended with Roth's assassination and the mass insurrections taking place throughout Selucid-occupied territories, Benedict was confronted by his younger cousins, Yamato and Naoto about his actions. The reason why he worked with Lupo was because of his drive to become as successful as they had, even if it wasn't within military terms. His jealousy for Yamato and Naoto was revealed as he was never looked by Kiriya as a potential member of Task Force 141 (although Kiriya saw many potentials with Benedict, especially hoping that he could go into politics). Yamato therefore disowns him and banishes him.
Benedict's role in the plot caused him to be labelled by the Lucis government as a traitor. Fearing for his life, he stayed in Erebonia. When the Deseleni War ended, Benedict was still a wanted man. Despite Kiriya's attempts and plea to spare his godchild's life, the Lucis government ordered Benedict to be executed for his role in the plot. Kiriya was also threatened with court martial if he doesn't carry out the orders. Despite being disowned, Yamato and Naoto refused to execute him. Kiriya was left with no choice but to send in Leon Statham to quietly execute him at Lake Gala.
Following his death, he was stripped of all honours in the Lucis Army. However, Kiriya made one final tribute to his godson by naming Building No. 1, where Kiriya's office was at in Fort Daidoji Kitagawa, as the Benedict Kitagawa Memorial Hall under approval by the Erebonian government.
