Bret John Day (born January 15th, 1952) is a Zamastanian politician and businessman serving as the Senator for Tregueux's 1st district since 1996, currently making him the longest serving incumbent senator in Congressional Hall. He also served as Governor of Tregueux from 1983-92. A member of the Blue Conservative Party, he served as the Majority Leader in the senate from 2014-2020, before endorsing Kendrick Benton as his successor. Day was a candidate for President in 2004, before dropping out of the race to endorse fellow party member and the eventual winner, Cassious Castovia.
Born to a farming family in central Tregueux, three of Bret's older brothers served in the army during the World War. Bret never met two of his older brothers, Darren and John, who died in the war. Day attended a local school in Salland before becoming an executive at Grantell, an agricultural corporation. In 1978, Day began working as chief legislative assistant to Senator Adam Cook in Tofino, managing a legislative department consisting of five members as well as assisting with speech writing and constituent services. In 1983, Day ran in a special referendum to replace the late-governor Henry Toresson and won, staying as governor of the province until 1992, when he declined to run for a fourth term. He ran for senate in 1996 and has held that seat since.
Day holds mostly conservative political positions, although he was known as a pragmatist and a moderate early in his political career. He is generally described as a libertarian, a term he has both embraced and rejected, as he describes himself as a "constitutionalist". He supports term limits, a balanced budget, and the widespread reduction of federal spending and taxation. He has opposed gun control, supports stricter immigration restrictions, supports the decriminalization of recreational drugs, and while he is pro-life he opposes federal bans on abortion.
