The Colony of New Madeira (Portuguese: Colônia da Nova Madeira) was the first European settlement in Garetolia. The Island of Novi'isida was discovered by Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes de Quierós in February of 1767 when his crew noticed some small rocks and a ritual bonfire in the distance, where they proceeded to sail. During the time, the Portuguese set up a small settlement of a few 13 men that lasted for almost two months. It is believed the native Ka'ekians on the island were frightened by the Portuguese, and thus never came into contact with them; one exception occured when a band of Ka'ekians attempted an ambush on the settlers, which failed, according to the diary of João do Riacho.
