The Mava civic awards system was instituted by Mava Council in 2011 on the fiftieth anniversary of Mava attaining full autonomy in March 1961. The awards recognise the achievements of, or service by, Maveans and was established to complement Atitlanese federal honours. The Leader of Mava Council makes the award in the name of the Council, with the Awards Committee responsible for reviewing nominations.

There are currently six awards:

  • The Service to the Community Award (Individual) for individuals who have made a "significant and long-term contribution to the community."
  • The Service to the Community Award (Group) for groups who have made a "significant and long-term contribution to the community."
  • The Young Person Award for a person younger than 18 who "represents and embodies the ambition and determination of the next generation."
  • The Art and Culture Award for person or persons who have made "valued contributions to culture in Mava and to its reputation abroad."
  • The Ambassador of Mava Award for a person who has "represented in an exemplary fashion the people, culture, and interests of Mava."
