The Trigintiviral Court (Latin: Curia Trigintiviri) is the sole court of last resort and highest court in all matters under Latin law. The Trigintiviral Court is among the bodies that composes Imperial Court. It holds discretionary appellate jurisdiction over all matters originating out of lower courts, whether ordinary or administrative courts, and original jurisdiction over all extraordinary matters, including probate, patent or trademark, regulation of nobility, titles and arms or seals, and high crimes. Cases are heard by a panel of 10 judges.
The originated out of an ancient magisterial board of thirty men, and named for its membership size, eventually growing to hold appellate jurisdiction over ordinary matters. The Trigintiviral Court was reformed in 1953, and was given three divisions: ordinary (public and private law), administrative, and extraordinary. In 1990, an unofficial fourth division was created for high crimes and treason, but is only convened on an ad hoc basis. The Court currently holds no jurisdiction over Imperial Edicts, decrees, or Executive Orders, including most Acts of the Senate, as Latium functions with an unwritten constitution. This limited jurisdiction on Acts of the Senate means that the Court may not overturn primary legislation, but may overturn legislation that is deemed beyond the Senate's functions or ability to pass. It also regulates the legal profession in Latium.
Members of the Court
There is no set membership for the Trigintiviral Court, and the only requirement is that each division sit a panel of 10 judges. At present, the court is composed of 59 judges, whom hold the style of "The Glorious" (vir gloriosus/gloriosissimus), and are informally referred to as Justice. The chief requirement to hold membership on the court is to be a licensed member of the legal profession in Latium. Typically, jurists are appointed from lower courts.
Justices appointed to the court serve at the Emperor's pleasure. Often times, appointees are appointed to a term of years, which often varies but rarely exceeds 15 years. In some instances a justice may be appointed for a term of life. The emperor may himself sit on the court for hearings and issue opinions, though in recent years this rarely, if ever, takes place.
