Weekly Music Countdown is a long-running Malgravean music show that has aired on MBC One since the 1980s. It is designed both to showcase popular music and highlight rising talent. Weekly Music Countdown also organises concerts outside Malgrave to promote various forms of Malgravean music overseas and make Malgravean audiences more aware of foreign culture.
History
After the completion of the Epping-Rensk Agreement and the end of the Malgravean Civil War, the country experienced a rapid increase in cultural expression. Such a period has now become known as the Cultural Revolution (Malgrave) and also is known as the start of idol culture in Malgrave, as reduced restrictions on movement across Malgrave led to artists being able to freely tour and showcase their music more openly.
At this time artists like Sakura Saito were first starting to gain popularity in the country, and as part of their efforts to promote their new album started touring bases of the Territorial Defence Force. Such efforts were eventually broadcast on television and grew to include other popular artists at the time like Anika Pontecorvo and Julian Chmiel.
Eventually, these concerts stopped, however, the popularity of the format was noted by Malgravean Broadcasting Corporation and work was started on a proposal to try and meet the popularity of these previous impromptu concerts, with the result being the creation of the Weekly Music Countdown.
Weekly Music Countdown was originally broadcast on a Monday evening and was supposed to start the week with a variety of both popular music and new songs from up-and-coming artists, however, the selection of Monday wasn't a popular choice as artists complained that charts released on Monday weren't fully reflective of the mood at the time and so the date was eventually changed to a Friday.
Since this change, the Weekly Music Countdown has become one of the most popular shows in the country with millions of households tuning in to watch live performances from their favourite idols and watch new talents. As a result, a variety of idols have also hosted the show themselves such as Rhee Chae-Yeong, Janina Pasternack, Park Eun-Ji and Choi Iseul.
Weekly Music Global Countdown
Starting in 2008, Weekly Music Countdown has started to host yearly tours outside of Malgrave called Weekly Music Global Countdown, such tours feature some of the most popular artists in the country and are designed to grant greater access to Malgravean artists to fans outside of Malgrave. In recent years the tour has visited locations both within Mystria such as Silverdale and outside like the Dornalian Republic, with popular acts like Eclipse and Venus previously taking part.
Weekly Music Global Countdown also promotes local talent, and numerous Dornalian and Silverdalean artists have gained greater popularity within Malgrave after taking part in these performances.
