The 2000 Summer Olympics, also known as Shanghan 2000, were an international multi-sport event for the Olympic Games held from August 12-26, 2000, in Shanghan, Yuan. A total of 8,737 athletes from 122 countries competed in 28 sports and 302 events. This was the second time Yuan had hosted the Olympic Games, the first being the 1977 Winter Games in Maiwan, and the third to be held in West Ausiana (the other being the 1984 Summer Games in Gangkou.

Yuan was awarded the games over four competitors in 1996, as the leadership of Hu Mintao and Zhen Yijun had opened Yuan to the international community as a more welcoming nation. The Government of the People's Republic of Yuan promoted the 2000 Games and invested heavily in new facilities and transport systems. 37 venues were used to host the events, including twelve constructed specifically for the 2000 Games. The 2000 Olympics were watched by 3.5 billion people worldwide, and featured the longest distance for an Olympic Torch relay. The 2000 Games also set numerous world and Olympic records, and were the second-most expensive Summer Olympics of all time, and the third most expensive overall after the 2017 Winter and 2004 Summer Games.

Bidding and Election

Under the direction of Hu Mintao, Shanghan was elected as the host city for the 2000 Summer Olympics on 2 March 1996, defeating bids from Tofino, Osmino, Sulifa City, and Ilhaveia. Prior to the session, five other cities (Cardiff, Osea, Melmingen, Leonrau, and Périnnois) had submitted bids to the IOC, but failed to make the short list chosen by the IOC Executive Committee. After the first round of voting, Shanghan held a significant lead over the other four candidates. Ilhaveia recieved only 2 votes and was eliminated. In the second round, Shanghan was supported by the most but failed to gain a majority of voters from Tofino, leading to a runoff where Shanghan once again recieved the most votes.

Members of the IOC did not disclose their votes, but news reports speculated that broad international support led to Yuan's selection, especially from developing nations that had received economic assistance from Yuan. The size of Yuan, its increased enforcement of doping controls, and sympathy concerning its loss of the 1984 Summer Games to Gangkou were all factors in the decision.

Human rights concerns expressed by international organizations and politicians in both Nortua and Zamastan were considered by the delegates. The IOC Executive Chair and others suggested that the selection might lead to improvements in human rights in Yuan. In addition, many IOC delegates who had formerly been athletes expressed concern about heat and air quality during the Games, considering the high levels of air pollution in Shanghan. Yuan outlined plans to address these environmental concerns in its bid application.
