Ekena (Also known as ‘Ēkena or The Republic of ‘Ēkena) is a Pythian island country with a few Dacia located between the South Kaido Sea, Meloji Sea, & the Mouth Gulf, on the Meager Ocean. With it sharing it's maritime borders with Kaidokoku, Herastonia, and Nishikaigan. It consists of over 50 islands with the largest being Ekena which is 93,560 km^2.

The islands of Ekena were once uninhabited until after the Absukians came in the 50's after the Great Reset. Absukians before the Great Reset were once hypothesized to have lived or originally came from the 4 Oceans of Sparkalia and possessed magical powers akin to the natives. However after the Great Reset, they have seemingly lossed the ability to utilize magic and have relied on technology and other inventions to bolster their society in a magic-dominated world. That is until after the people not of this world started to come in and usher in a new era of technology in the 1360's. With Polslava being one of the nations that ‘Ēkena had developed and established relations with and bolstered ties to. Who have in turned helped grow the nations economic and technological prowess.

Ekena remains to be a neutral country who doesn't seek to align itself with alliances such as the Pythian Union or other regional or international alliances and remain to be on good terms with nations in Sparkalia. Though this means that they would have to rely on themselves when it comes to wars and thus they spend a bit of money into their military. Though colonial holdings near them such as the islands held by Nova Solarius and Nishikaigan has spooked the government of ‘Ēkena. Fearing that they may be subjected to the whims or plays of the Imperial Powers in Sparkalia. They enacted a limited conscription of soldiers to keep their military at a similar amount of manpower so as it doesn't fluctuate. Keeping a lot of reserves for when they are needed for a defensive war.

As a developed country, it had went major economic, social, and technological changes from the 1470's till now, having transformed from a industrial society to a post-modern society. The service sector dominates the nation economy of Ekena, followed by the industrial sector, then the agricultural sector. Tourism is also a rising industry within Ekena. Nationally, legislative authority is vested in an elected, unicameral Parliament, while executive political power is exercised by the Cabinet, led by the prime minister. In addition, Ekena is organised into X Regional Provinces and 58 Territorial Authorities for local island govenrnment purposes.

Etymology

ʻĒkena is a literal translation from Laulāʻaha to English means Edena. 'Eka meaning wind and -na coming from the word Nana in Laulāʻaha which either is a name of a star and/or the name of the month of Novus.

History

Nova Antiquity (1 - 550)

Ekena was once a few several islands uninhabited by anything after the Great Reset. An island that sat around convergents, divergents, and subductions. Making it a place with a few active volanos. The land had been settled by Absukians in the year 7 AR. Where they emerged from the waters and settled upon the lands after a significant decrease in their population. The Great Reset left the Absukian population without any ability to do magic. Their magic being the key to survive, thrive, and dominate the oceans. Thus with the ability to condure magic gone their population numbers dwindled.

The islands were divided by several tribes split by ethnic groups. The Eastern Absukians who were the most common Ethnic group; theorized to have been civilians or commonfolks before the Reset due to their prevalence. The Southern Absukians, who differ from the others by the location of their fins along with their dark sclera eyes; it is believed that they were mostly soldiers or hunters before the Reset. The Western Absukians differ from others by their short stature and large ears used to cool them during hot summers; it is believed they used to reside near seamounts and were sea forge masters before the Great Reset. Then the Northern Absukians, who differ from the rest by their slanted eyes, pelvic fins, and culture even; it is believed that Northern Absukians were the Nobility or Royalty of underwater Kingdoms and Nations before the Great Reset.

Many of these tribes were rather friendly with each other, sharing land, reaources, and other things. Due to the geography of Ekena. The peasantry or common tribesman were more empowered than the tribal leaders or chiefs, this is especiallt true for the smaller islands. As tribes couldn't centralize their power or levy taxes on those that cross into their seas or waters. especially given the fact that much of the common tribesman knew how to swim or build rafts to float goods from one island to another.

Population would begin to grow on the islands as Fisheries expanded, cultivation of the lands was achieved around 100 - 150 AR, along with the domestication of animals on Ekena and improved weaponry. Alliances and marriages between tribal leaders and Tribes become more common and competition for resources become more prevalent. With tribes slowly sharing less with one another and tensions growing between them.

Middle Ages (551-1100)

Early Middle Ages (551-734)

574 is when the political landscape of the nation changed. With the Hikina Tribes who reside near Kaidokoku and are made up of a majority of Eastern Absukians. Moanalu Confederacy was a made up of Northern Absukians as well as Eastern Absukians, who occupied the Eastern parts of the main island. The Waipuna nation is made up of Western Absukians who occupy the Western part of the main island and western islands. The Hawana Confederacy made up of Southern Absukians occupy parts of the main island along with the Southern Islands.

Late Middle Ages (918-1100)

During this time tensions were high between the Moanalu Confederacy and the Hikina Tribes. While Kaidokoku was in its Era of Loss in 1050 AR. The nation that would bring Kaidokoku to a new Era was the Chinotsuki Empire, which would begin to establish relations with Hikina Tribes, trading goods and services to them. Whilst the Empire was busy warring the Hadakkata Kingdom along with other clans. The Moanalu Confederacy would begin a war with the Hikina Tribes from 1576-1578 AR. As the Chinotsuki Empire finished their war the Moanalu Confederacy had thought that the Empire would not exhaust itself after their war. Though to their surprise Chinotsuki ships and soldiers arrives to the Dacian islands the Absukians held and fought with Moanaluan soldiers from 1082-1083 AR. The MoanaluannConfederacy lost many of its Eastern islands but held them off of the main island.

Modern Era (1101-Present)

Early Modern Period (1101-1271)

Ekena had been enjoying relative isolation and peace for several years and continuing scientific advances up until the islands a bit more South of Ekena was taken by Nova Solarius in their year of rapid colonial expansions during the years 972 -1467 AR. Which prompted many local island governments to conduct conscriptions in limited numbers in order to protect the Republic of Ekena. Limited conscription has thus continued from 1132 AR till present day.

Late Modern Period (1272-1441)

In the 1360's where people from outerspace crashed landed onto Sparkalia and now inhabit Sparkalia with the rest of the people. This both posed a huge threat to Ekena but also new possibilities for the people of Ekena. Since the 1380's till the 1480's have been trying to increase relations with extraterrestrial people and societies along with developing their technology to be on par with them.

Contemporary Era (1442-Present)

In the 1470's Ekena developed and started to increase relations with Polslava given their similar views and not having imperialistic ambitions akin to that of some larger and more powerful nations. Thus Polslava along with subsidization and aid from the Ekena Government attempted to modernize their nation through reforms and other means.

The Ekena Defense Forces [EDF] was established as the new modernized and centralized military of Ekena, it had 3 main divisions such as the Ekena Ground Forces [EGF] in 1483, Ekena Naval Forces [ENF] in 1488, Ekena Air Forces [EAF] in 1499. Militia's that served in Ekena's old military system where it emphasized self-defense of each island through guerrila and civillian defenses were organized into the Ekena Home Guard [EHG] which focuses on the rapid mobilization and deployment of light infantry in the smaller islands of Ekena. Another Branch known as the Ekena Coast Guards [ECG] may be used during wartime though they primarily focus on immigration; national border patrol, security, and integrity; coastal patrol; marine border protection; marine search and rescue.

Modernizing its industrial capacity from what it had, Ekena created it's first carbon tax in 1489, taxing industries, individuals, energy provides and other systems that utilized fossil fuels or non-renewable energies by $0.25 per metric ton of CO2 produced. Today that number has skyrocketed $125 per metric ton of CO2 produced. This has allowed for the gradual transition from a non-renewable based economy to a more renewable and eco-friendly based economy with subsidization into renewable energy sources and eco-friendly products that do not produce or even reduce CO2 emissions.

While Ekena focuses on eco-friendly initiatives it has also taken great strides in improving agricultural production due to new ways of increasing crop yield and agricultural productions. Which has boosted its population from a measily 2.375 million in the 1480's to 8.708 Million in the year 1612. Though with said increased population comes new demand for land, housing, and jobs. In the 1480's the population density of Ekena was only about 22.3/km^2, in 1612 the population density of Ekena is tripled that with about 82/km^2. In order to accomodate the amount of people within a limited amount of land. In the 1520's Laulāʻaha passed the Urban Planning Action Code 1522.26, establishing zoning laws, height restrictions, road limitation, planning of public transportation, pedestrian sidewalks, etc.

While the nation has been developing its economy and infrastructure. A month ago Nishikaigan military ships expanded into the Southern islands near Ekena. Which prompted to increase it's military numbers from 150,000 personnel to almost 300,000 personnel in total.

Demographics

Absukians

Much of the population of Ekena is natively and majority Absukian, Absukians are alien sharks that have evolved into their current form, possessing fish and amphibian-like traits, such as fins of a shark, webbed feet and hands, along with gills which allow them to swim and thrive underwater, They live amphibiously both on land and water. They did not develop mammal ears until later on in their evolution. An Absukian's average height is around 5'3 ft (160 cm) with their maximum height being 6'7ft (200.7 cm).

Hands & Feet: All Absukians have five fingers, a thumb, and five toes. They have webbed hands & feet as well like amphibians. They also have claws; their claws are slightly translucent, and they can be long or short. They have paw pas on their feet. But sometimes it can be on their hands. A flexible claw on each side of their feet resembles almost velociraptor-like.

Beards: Through evolution, Absukians began to develop 'facial hair' from their appendages.

Eyes: Their eyes have scotopic vision & have tapetum lucidum which allows them to see in low-light environments such as murky or deep waters. They have a nictitating membrane which allows them to feed on prey to help protect their eyes. (Southern Absukians have darker sclera unless crossbred with other Absukian subspecies.)

Ftills: Absukian frills come in different shapes & sizes. Baby Absukians (pups) don't have fully developed frills until they grow up to 3 months old.

Ears: Absukian ears come in different sizes from each region. Some develop ears that are abnormal & unique due to their genetics at birth through crossbreeding. The most common ear shapes are the Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern. (Western Absukian has the biggest ears out of all the 3 regional Absukians, the reason why they possess such big ears is because of the hot environments they are in which allows them to dissipate excess heat during hot days.

Bioluminescence Tongues: All Absukians have bioluminescent tongues, the very major muscular organ. Their tongue is slim and always seen as shiny looking. But baby Absukians do not possess glowing tongues until later in their childhood. Absukians have 1 set row of sharp teeth and a long tongue, the length is similar to pangolins, anteaters. (Absukian tongues can be around 7-12 inches long [17.8 cm - 30.5 cm)

Neck fluff scales: The scales that act like neck fluff were a rare trait passed down from the ancestry of each region. It can also be a form of armour for each Absukian. Their scales are smooth and surprisingly flexible. The pointed tips of the scales do not hurt them in the slightest.

Absukian Subspecies

There are four subspecies of Absukians, each with unique features and traits. Starting off with an overview of each one. Each regional variant has a different appearance to one another.

Eastern Absukians: They are the most common subspecies among them. The most notable feature is their snouts which can range from short, long, or pointed, they also have hip fins. They possess standard traits: webbed hands, feet and frills. Eastern Absukians that have been crossbred can have other traits too. This is the same for other subspecies.

Western Absukians: They are the smallest subspecies. They sometimes have facial markings that look like a mask. They possess forearm fins as well. They are the most friendly of the three. Western Absukians usually have big ears, which are used to cool them down in hot environments.

Southern Absukians: They have sharper claws, fins on their ankles and pure dark sclera eyes. Southern Absukians are seen as a tougher and brawny subspecies. Their appearance is seen as scary due to their dark sclera eyes and intimidating look. Their dark sclera eyes allow them to catch the tiniest amount of light. They are the only nocturnal & crepuscular subspecies.

Northern Absukians: They are commonly known for their noble and elegant attitude and looks. They have slanted eyes but can have other eye traits; have similar height to the Eastern. The fins they have located around their crotch area are the pelvic fins, however, not all have pelvic fins. They have earlobes that range from small to large: which allows them to wear ear gauges. Northern Absukians have an odd way of taking compliments. They enjoy compliments on their ear gauges, it is considered attractive to have colourful, glamourous gauges: the size of the gauges also matters.
