Alur K'lar (lit. superior place) officially the Lolth Imposed Matriarchy of Alur K'lar , is a small, land-locked society based within Vedir Delmah (lit. mount home). Their society is comprised of a series of underground communities that center around the capital city of Menzo within the middle of Vedir Delmah. There are various artificially crafted surface access points for the nation with farmlands immediately surrounding the mountain. Most citizens live within the mountian, but field workers, primarily comprised of non-ethnic Akh, live on the land as they work the land for the betterment of the entire nation.

Etymology

In the Akh (ethnic Dark Elf) language, the country's name of Alur K'lar means "Superior Land" or "Superior Place," which is in line with the common belief among the Akh of their superiority over other ethnic groups.

Ethnic Groups

Akh (Ethnic Dark Elves)

The Akh (90% of the population) or ethnic dark elves, make up the majority of the citizens of Alur K'lar. Akh are generally dark-skinned (grey to black) sapient beings with white-hair and pointed ears. Their heights generally range from 165 to 185 centimeters with no marked differences between the biological sexes.

Colnbluth (Non-Ethnic Dark Elves)

The remaining citizens of Alur K'lar fell into the category of "Colnbluth" (lit. outsider) in the Akh langauge, which is a derogitory term for those who are not ethnically Akh. These are primarily humans (4%) and Darthiir (Surface Elves, 3%). Darthiir or surface elves are genetically similar to the Akh, except for minor differences in physical appearance (skin in various shades of green with deep, black hair). Both humans and Darthiir are generally treated poorly in society, serving in manual labor roles and, occasionally, enslaved by Klarian nobles.

Society and culture

Alur K'lar is a relatively homogeneous society that has a fierce history of isolationism. Most of society is centered around the capital city of Menzo, which is located within the center of Vedir Delmah. This is where the core of the families of the five noble houses (Cormrael, Oussafin, Illykur, D'ourden, and Zinzerena) reside. Additionally, the high temple to Lolth and Valsharess' castle are located in Menzo.

Lolth Worship

Adherents:

80% of the population, predominantly worshipped among the Akh.

Summary of Beliefs:

Worship of the Akh creator goddess, Lolth. Lolth, (also known as the Spider Queen, Queen of the Web Pit, or Dark Mother), is traditionally described to have a full spider body and, where the head is supposed to be, contains the torso of a feminine presenting Akh who is considered to be the pinacle of beauty according to Akh beauty standards. Lolth teaches that the Akh are superior to the other races of the realms, but especialy Darthiir. Worship services generally involve songs of praise of Lolth, burning of precious oils and incense, channeling of power through precious gems, and live offerings. Historically, humans and Darthiir were periodically offered as sacrifices to Lolth; most modern sects of Lolth worshippers reject sapient sacrifices.

Selvetarm Worship

Adherents:

8% of the population, worshipped among Akh and certain Darthiir communities.

Summary of Beliefs:

Warrior deity of the Akh. Worship primarily by those in the military. Worship among Akh followers tends to be syncretic with worship of Lolth, as Selvetarm is considered by tradition to be the guardian of Lolth. Among Darthiir followers of Selvetarm, worship tends to be private and involves the invoking of Selvetarm for protection of the Darthiir people.

Edomines

Adherents:

3-4% of the population, faith only exits among humans in Alur K'lar.

Summary of Beliefs:

The Edomines claim to be an ancient group worshiping a singular, nameless deity. They believe their nameless god will provide as needed, created the universe, and calls adherents to a life of radical forgiveness and sharing. Additionally, they believe that their nameless deity calls for good, protective stewardship of all of creation, including the environment. Their chief prophet was a man named Coln Night. Night speak of a revelation from their nameless god who promised that one day, Edomines would be free from Akh persecution and be restored to a new land in the future. Sermons regularly incorporate this future hope for a new world.

Theocratic Monarchy

The Valsharess (Empress/Queen) is selected by the Matriarchs of the five noble houses (Cormrael, Oussafin, Illykur, D'ourden, and Zinzerena) of the Akh upon the death of the previous Valsharess. Tradition teaches that the five noble houses were selected by Lolth to rule the Akh and all those who live within their domain. Matriarchs from the Cormrael House have served as the monarch for the past 70 years.

Five Noble Akh Houses

Houses (or clans) are a close-knit collection of interrelated Akh. The Houses are each managed by a high profile Matriarch who makes wide reaching decisions that impact all Akh citizens of the House and their non-ethnically Akh servants. Historical tradition has established five major noble houses from which the Valsharess (or Empress) can be selected. These Houses are, in order of nobility, Cormrael, Oussafin, Illykur, D'ourden, and Zinzerena. When the Valsharess passes or has decided to abdicate, the High Priestess of Lolth shall call upon their goddess for a sign as to which noble house shall be selected to represent the Akh and all of Alur K'lar as Valsharess. Historically, the selection of the next Valsharess is a current House Matriarch of their eldest daughter with a few historical exceptions.
